WRITE THE NUMBER IN NUMERAL FORM

To write the given phrase in numeral form, we should be aware of number system and place value.

Example 1 :

Write in numeral form:

a) forty seven

b) six hundred and forty eight 

c) seven hundred and one

d) three thousand, four hundred and forty eight

e) six hundred and twenty five thousand, nine hundred and ninety

f) three million, six hundred thousand, nine hundred and seventy three.

Solution :

a) forty seven

There are 4 tens and 7 ones.

So, 47 is the numeral form.

b) six hundred and forty eight 

There are 6 hundreds 4 tens and 8 ones.

So, 648 is the numeral form.

c) seven hundred and one

There are 7 hundreds 0 tens and 1 one.

So, answer is 701

d) three thousand, four hundred and forty eight

There are 3 thousands 4 hundreds 4 tens and  8 ones.

So, the answer is 3448.

e) six hundred and twenty five thousand, nine hundred and ninety

There are 6 hundred thousands 2 ten thousands 5 thousands 9 hundreds 9 tens and 0 ones.

So, the answer is 625990.

f) three million, six hundred thousand, nine hundred and seventy three.

There are 3 one hundred thousand 6 hundred thousand 0 ten thousand 0 thousand 9 hundreds 7 tens and 3 ones.

So, the answer is 360973.

Example 2 :

Write the following numbers:

a) one less than nine

b) two greater than ten

c) one less than 200

d) 2 more than 3000

e) the largest two digit number

Solution :

a) one less than nine = 9-1 ==> 8

b) two greater than ten = 10 + 2 ==>  12

c) one less than 200 = 200-1 ==> 199

d) 2 more than 3000 = 3000 + 2 ==>  3002

e) the largest two digit number = 99

Example 3 :

Fill in the blanks:

(a) 1 lakh = _______ thousand.

(b) 1 million = _______ hundred thousand.

(c) 1 crore = _______ ten lakh.

(d) 1 million = _______ lakh.

Solution :

(a) Let us write one lakh,

100000 consist of 5 zeroes.

100000 = 100 x 1000

So, one hundred thousands is the answer.

(b) 1 million = _______ hundred thousand.

1000000 consists of 6 zeroes.

1000000 = 10 x 100000

So, the answer is ten hundred thousand.

(c) 1 crore = _______ ten lakh.

10000000 consists of 7 zeroes

10000000 = 10 x 1000000

So, the answer is 10 ten lakh.

(d) 1 million = _______ lakh.

1000000 consists of 6 zeroes.

1000000 = 10 x 100000

So, the answer is 10 ten lakh.

A town had three and fourteen-hundredths inches of rain during June. What is the value of the digit in the tenths place?

Solution : 

Given that, three and fourteen-hundredths inches

Numeral form of rain during June :

3.014

Numeral at the tenth place is 0. So, option c is correct.

Example 6 :

The models represent the price for a pound of grapes at four different stores. Each model is shaded to represent a price that is greater than $1.00.

Solution :

Price in Store L = $1.88

Price in Store M = $1.07

Price in Store N = $1.78

Price in Store P = $1.99

$1.60 < $1.78 < $1.88 < $1.90

Store N and store L only, option c is correct.

Example 7 :

Which mixed number is equivalent to 17.04?

a) 17   4/10      b) 17 1/4      c) 17   40/10      d) 17   4/100.

Solution :

= 17.04

= 17 + 0 + 4/100

= 17 + 4/100

= 17   4/100

Option d is correct.

Example 7 :

How many times greater is the value represented by the digit 6 in the number 6,419 than the value represented by the digit 6 in the number 84,362?

a) 10      b) 100      c) 1,000     d) 10,000

Solution :

  • Place value of 6 in 6,419 is thousand
  • Place value of 6 in 84362 is ten.

10 x 100 = 1000

So, the digit 6 in the number 6419 is 100 times greater than the digit 6 in the number 84362.
