PLACE VALUE OF A NUMBER

The place or position of a digit in a number determines its value.

For example, 5378 is

5 thousands 3 hundreds 7 tens and 8 ones

5000 300 70 + 8

Example 1 :

Write the number represented by the digit 6.

362

Solution :

362 = 3 hundreds 6 tens 2 ones

6 is in the ten's place. So, 6 x 10 = 60.

Example 2 :

Write the number represented by the digit 7.

175 236

Solution :

175 236

In the given number above, place value of 7 is 70000.

Example 3 :

Write the following number in words.

(i) 91 (ii) 9807 (iii) 43670

Solution :

(i) 91

In words : Ninety one

(ii) 9807

In words : Nine thousand eight hundred and seven.

(iii) 43670

In words : Forty three thousand six hundred seventy.

Example 4 :

Write the following numbers.

a) one less than nine  b) two greater than ten

c) one less than 200  d) 2 more than 3000

e) the largest two digit number.

Solution :

a) 9-1 = 8  b) 10+2 = 12  c) 200-1 = 199

d) 3000+2 = 3002  e) 99

Example 5 :

Express in simplest form:

a) 90 + 7 

b) 400 + 30 + 6

c) 8000 + 4

Solution :

a) 90 + 7 = 97

b) 400 + 30 + 6 = 436

c) 8000 + 4 = 8004

Example 6 :

Write in expanded form:

a) 730

b) 4871

c) 68 904

Solution :

a) 730 = 700 + 30 + 0

b) 4871 = 4000 + 800 + 70 + 1

c) 68 904 = 60000 + 8000 + 900 + 0 + 4

Example 7 :

Which of the following is the expanded form of 45010 ?

a)  40000 + 500 + 10 + 1     b)  40000 + 1000 + 5    c)  45000 + 0 + 10 + 0

d)  40000 + 5000 + 0 + 10 + 0

Solution :

45010 = 4 x 10000 + 5 x 1000 + 0 x 100 + 1 x 10 + 0 x 1

= 40000 + 5000 + 0 + 10 + 0

So, option d is correct.

Example 8 :

Which of the following number one thousand more than 12238 ?

a)  12338     b)  13328     c) 13238     d)  22238

Solution :

The given number is 12238. The number which is at one thounsand's place is 2. 

The number which is one thousand more than means, we have to increase 1 with the number that we have in thousands place. Then, the answer will be

13238

Option c is correct.

Example 9 :

Which of the following number one hundred lesser  than 12238 ?

a)  12138     b)  12228     c) 13238     d)  22238

Solution :

The given number is 12238. The number which is at one hundred's is 2. 

The number which is one hundred less than means, we have to decrease 1 with the number that we have in hundreds place. Then, the answer will be

12138

Option a is correct.

Example 10 :

Write the place value of the underlined digit : 

a)  808

b) 770

c)  640

d) 888

e) 520

Solution :

a)  808

The underlined digit, 8 is at one's place.

b) 770

The underlined digit, 7 is at hundred's place

c)  640

The underlined digit, 4 is at ten's place.

d) 888

The underlined digit, 8 is at ten's place.

e) 520

The underlined digit 0 is at one's place.

Example 11 :

Match the following :

The place value of 3 in 532

The place value of 0 in 804

The place value of the hundred’s digit in 666

The place value of 3 in 553

The place value of ten’s digit in 440

Solution :

The place value of 3 in 532 is 30

The place value of 0 in 804 is 0

The place value of the hundred’s digit in 666 is 6

The place value of 3 in 553 is one, then 3 x 1, 3 is the answer.

The place value of ten’s digit in 440 is 10, then 4 x 10, 40 is the answer.

Example 12 :

Write a number which has 2 in the one’s place, 5 in the ten’s place and 7 in the hundred’s place.

Solution :

752 = 700 + 50 + 2 

Example 13 :

Write a number which has 0 in the one’s place, 0 in the ten’s place and 1 in the hundred’s place. 

Solution :

100 = 1 x 100 + 0 x 10 + 0 x 1

= 100 + 0 + 0

So, 100 is the required number.

Example 14 :

Write the number which has 9 in the one’s, ten’s and hundred’s place

Solution :

999 = 9 x 100 + 9 x 10 + 9 x 1

So, the required number is 999.

Example 15 :

Write the place value of 5 in each position in the number 555. 

Solution :

Given number is 555.

= 5 x 100 + 5 x 10 + 5 x 1

The number which is at the one's place, ten's place hundred's place is 5.

Example 16 :

Write three numbers which have 0 in the ten’s place.

Solution :

Some numbers in which 0 at the ten's place,

204, 305, 507, 209, . ...... etc

Example 17 :

What number would you get by inter changing the one’s and hundred’s digits of the number 901?

Solution :

Given number is 901,

Number which is at the one's place = 1

Number which is at the hundred's place = 9

By interchanging them, we get 109.
