A new born baby has 270 bones and an adult has 206 bones. Find the ratio of bones in an adult to that of a new born baby.

Solution :

Number of bones of an adult = 206 bones.

Number of bones of a new born baby = 270 bones.

By ratio,

= Adult bones : New born bones

= 206 : 270

HCF of (206 : 270) is 2.

= (206/2) : (270/2)

 = 103 : 135

Problem 2 :

On Monday morning, Kim received 120 e- mails and responded to 60 e-mails. What is the ratio of e – mails that Kim received to the mails that she answered?

Solution :

Kim received e-mails = 120.

Kim responded e-mails = 60.

By ratio,

= Received e-mails : Responded e-mails

= 120 : 60

HCF of (120 : 60) is 60.

= (120/60) : (60/60)

= 2 : 1

Problem 3 :

A boutique sold 72 designer outfits and 24 pieces of jewelry over the Christmas weekend. Find the ratio of the number of outfits sold to the pieces of jewelry sold.

Solution :

In boutique sold outfits = 72 designer outfits.

In boutique sold jewelry = 24 pieces.

By ratio,

= Outfits sold : Jewelry sold

= 72 : 24

HCF of (72 : 24) is 24.

= (72/24) : (24/24)

= 3 : 1

Problem 4 :

There are 26 letters in the English language and 24 in Korean. What is the ratio of letters in the Korean language to the letters in the English language?

Solution :

Number of letters in the English language = 26 letters.

Number of letters in the Korean language = 24 letters.

By ratio,

= Korean language : English language

= 24 : 26

HCF of (24 : 26) is 2.

= (24/2) : (26/2)

= 12 : 13

Problem 5 :

The Earth takes 24 hours to rotate around its own axis and the moon takes27 days. What is the ratio of the time taken by the moon to the time taken by the Earth to rotate around their respective axes? (Hint : Convert hours to days)

Solution :

The Moon takes to rotate around its own axis = 27 days.

The Earth takes to rotate around its own axis = 1 days.

By ratio,

 = Moon : Earth

= 27 : 1

HCF of (27 : 1) is 1.

= (27/1) : (1/1)

= 27 : 1

Problem 6 :

In a small business, 40 of the employees are men and 30 of the employees are women. What is ratio of women to men?

Solution :

The number of employees in women = 30

The number of employees in men = 40

By ratio,

= Women : Men

= 30 : 40

HCF of (30 : 40) is 1.

= (30/1) : (40/1)

= 30 : 40

The length of a rectangular garden is 20 feet and the width is15 feet. What is ratio of length to width?

Solution :

The length of a rectangular garden = 20 feet.

The width of a rectangular garden = 15 feet.

By ratio,

= Length : Width

= 20 : 15

HCF of (20 : 15) is 5.

= (20/5) : (15/5)

= 4 : 3

Problem 8 :

The ratio of your monthly allowance to your friend’s monthly allowance is 5 : 3. The monthly allowances total $40. How much is each allowance?

Solution :

Total amount = $40

Ratio between your monthly allowance to your friend's monthly allowance = 5 : 3

Your allowance = 5x and your friend's allowance = 3x

5x + 3x = 40

8x = 40

x = 40/8

x = 5

5(5) ==> 25

3(5) ==> 15

So, your allowance is $25 and your friend's allowance is $15.

Problem 9 :

You separate 42 bulbs of garlic into two groups: one for planting and one for cooking. You will plant 3 bulbs for every 4 bulbs that you will use for cooking. Each bulb has about 8 cloves. About how many cloves will you plant?

Solution :

The 7 parts represent 42 bulbs, so each part represents 42 ÷ 7 = 6 bulbs.

Problem 10 :

A sports store donates basketballs and soccer balls to the boys and girls club. The ratio of basketballs to soccer balls is 7 : 6. The store donates 24 soccer balls. How many basketballs does the store donate?

Solution :

7x = basket balls and 6x = soccer balls

Number of soccer balls = 24

6x = 24

x = 24/6

x = 4

Number of basket ball = 7(4) ==> 28
