= 345

Distance to be covered = 502 - 345

= 157

So, 157 miles to be covered.

a) £12.04    b) £12.96    c) £11.04     d) £11.96    e) £11.00

subtracting-whole-numbers-q1.png

Solution :

= Cost of a scarf + Cost of two badges + Cost of a whistle

= 3.99 + 2(0.99) + 1.99

= 3.99 + 1.98 + 1.99

= 7.96

Required change = 20 - 7.96

= £12.04

So, option a is the correct answer.

Problem 12 :

Which of these calculations gives the largest amount?

a) 21 × 20 – 18 + 19        b) 18 × 19 – 21 + 20       c) 20 × 18 – 19 + 21

d) 21 × 18 – 20 + 1      e) 20 x 19 - 21 + 18

Solution :

Option a :

= 21 × 20 – 18 + 19

= 420 - 18 + 19

= 421

Option b :

= 18 × 19 – 21 + 20

= 342 - 21 + 20

= 341

Option c :

= 20 × 18 – 19 + 21

= 360 - 19 + 21

= 362

Option d :

= 21 × 18 – 20 + 1

= 378 - 20 + 1

= 379 - 20

= 359

Option e :

= 20 x 19 - 21 + 18

= 380 - 21 + 18

= 359 + 18

= 377

So, option a is greater.
