WORD PROBLEMS ON OPERATIONS WITH DECIMALS

Problem 1 :

During five days, you drive 15.4 miles, 24.2 miles, 10.4 miles, 18.7 miles, and 7.5 miles. How many miles did you drive during those five days ?

Solution :

Number of days = 5

So, number of miles covered in all 5 days is 76.2.

Problem 2 :

If you are given 3 checks, one for $36.98, another for $17.27, and a third for $260, how much is the total of all 3 checks ?

Solution :

Number of checks = 3

First checks = $36.98

Second checks = $17.27

Third checks = $260

So,  the total of all 3 checks is $314.25.

Problem 3 :

If a car gets 42.1 mpg on the highway, how many gallons of fuel will it use by traveling 340 highway miles ? (round answer to tenths)

Solution :

Total miles = 340

Car travels = 42.1 miles

Number of gallons = Total miles/Miles per gallon

By using long division method.

8.076 is round to nearest tenths is 8.1 gallons.

Problem 4 :

If you need to cut 5 pieces of glass from a 14 feet length, how long should each piece be ?

Solution :

If you need to cut 5 pieces of glass.

Length = 14 feet

Hence, the length of each piece of glass should be 2.8 feet.

Problem 5 :

If you purchase a TV and pay $40 down and $32.60 a month for 8 months, what was the purchase price of the TV ?

Solution :

Down payamount = $40

Monthly payamount = $32.60

Number of months = 8

Total pay amount =  monthly payment × the number of months.

= $32.60 × 8

Total pay amount = $260.8

Purchase price amount

= down pay amount + amount to be paid for 8 months

So,  the purchase price of the TV is $300.80.

Problem 6 :

If the revenues from the extra 1/4% sales tax amounted to $48,136.47 in 1983 and is to be divided equally among 7 different departments within the city of Albuquerque, how much will each department receive ? (round to the nearest cent)

Solution :

1/4% sales tax for the amount = $48,136.47

= 0.25% of 48136.47

= 0.0025 (48136.47)

= 120.3411

Divide into 7 equal parts.

= 120.34/7

So, each department receive the money $17.20.

Problem 7 :

If the total precipitation (rainfall and snow) for the year at a mountain town is expected to be 37.9 inches and it has already rained 26.82 inches, how many more inches of precipitation are expected ?

Solution :

If the total precipitation for the year at a mountain town = 37.9 inches

Already rained 26.82 inches

11.08 inches of precipitation are expected.
