Tim brought 9 six-packs of soda to a club party. How many cans of soda did Tim bring?

Solution :

Number of small packs of soda in one big pack = 6

Total number of packs = 9

Number of cans of soda cans = 9(6)

= 54

Number of small cans he buys = 54.

Problem 2 :

Kathryn bought 8 flats of impatiens for her flower bed. Each flat has 24 flowers. How many flowers did Kathryn buy?

Solution :

Number of flowers in each flat = 24

Number of flats = 8

= 8(24)

= 192

Kathryn buys 192 flowers.

Problem 3 :

Stephanie is making punch for a party. The recipe calls for twice as much fruit juice as club soda. If she uses 10 cups of club soda, how much fruit juice should she use?

Solution :

1 cup of club soda = 2 x fruit juice

10 cups of club soda = 2 (10)

= 20 cups of fruit juice

Problem 4 :

Andrea is making potato salad for a buffet luncheon. The recipe says the number of servings of potato salad will be twice the number of pounds of potatoes. If she buys 30 pounds of potatoes, how many servings of potato salad will there be?

Solution :

Number of servings of potato salad = 2 number of pounds of potatoes

Number of servings = 2 (30)

Number of servings = 60

Problem 5 :

The meeting room in a senior center is rectangular, with length 42 feet and width 34 feet. What is the area of the meeting room?

Solution :

Length of rectangular room = 42 feet

Width of the room = 34 feet

Area of the room = Length x width

= 34 x 42

= 1428

Problem 6 :

According to NCAA regulations, the dimensions of a rectangular football field must be 360 feet by 160 feet. What is the area of the football field?

Solution :

Length of the field = 360 feet

Width of the field = 160 feet

Area of the football field = 360 x 160

= 57, 600

Problem 7 :

Javier owns 300 shares of stock in one company. On Tuesday, the stock price rose $12 per share. How much money did Javier’s portfolio gain?

Solution :

Number of shares = 300

Cost of one share = $12

= 300(12)

= $3600

Carlton got a $200 raise in each paycheck. He gets paid 24 times a year. How much higher is his new annual salary?

Solution :

Cost of each paycheck = 200

New annual salary = 24(200)

= $4800

Problem 9 :

There are 28 classrooms at Anna C. Scott elementary school. Each classroom has 26 student desks. What is the total number of student desks?

Solution :

Number of student desks = 26

Number of class rooms = 28

Total number of student desks = 26(28)

= 728

Problem 10 :

Shawnte bought a rug for the hall of her apartment. The rug is 3 feet wide by 18 feet long. What is the area of the rug?

Solution :

Length of rug = 18 feet

Width of rug = 3 feet

Area of rug = 18(3)

= 54 square feet

Area of the rug is 54 square feet.

Problem 11 :

A vendor supplies 32 litres of milk to a hotel in the morning and 68 litres of milk in the evening. If the milk costs 1.5 per litre, how much money is due to the vendor per day?

Solution :

Total quantity of milk supplied = 32 + 68

= 100 liters

Cost of milke per liter = $1.5

Total cost = 100 x 1.5

= $150

Problem 12 :

A taxidriver filled his car petrol tank with 40 litres of petrol on Monday. The next day, he filled the tank with 50 litres of petrol. If the petrol costs $4.4 per litre, how much did he spend in all on petrol?

Solution :

Quantity of petrol = 40 + 50

= 90 liters

Cost of petrol per liter = $4.4

Total cost = 90 x 4.4

= $396

Problem 13 :

Raven is asked to check the answer to the multiplication problem below. Which number sentence could she use to check her answer?

23 x 452 = 10396

a)  23 + 452 = 475     b)  452 - 23 = 429

c)  10396 x 23 = 452      d)  10396 ÷ 23 = 452

Solution :

a x b = c, then b = c/a and a = b/c

When 25 x 452 = 10396,

452 = 10396 / 23

So, option c is correct.

Problem 14 :

The menu below shows the prices at Lunchtime Café. Lucita orders a turkey sandwich and two fruit cups. What expression should she use to determine the cost of her meal?

Solution :

Items ordered are turkey sandwhich and two fruit cups.

4.50 + 2 x 2.50

So, option a is correct.

Problem 15 :

Each student in fifth grade donates 4 cans of 14 food to the food bank. There are 285 fifth-grade students. Which of the following shows the number of cans donated and the correct justification for the number?

a) 71 because 285 divided by 4 is approximately 71

b)  289 because 285 plus 4 is 289

c) 1,120 because 280 times 4 is 1,120

d) 1,140 because 285 times 4 is 1,140

Solution :

Total number of cans = 285 x 4

= 1140

So, option d is correct.
