WORD PROBLEMS ON ELAPSED TIME

A day consists of 24 hours. In a clock, we can use 12 hours maximum. The next 12 hours will be the remaining half of the day.

1 hour = 60 minutes

Adding and subtracting hours and minutes :

For example,

if we want to add 4 hours and 17 minutes, we can write it as 4 : 17.

If we want to add 4 hours and 10 minutes with 13 hours and 55 minutes, we will get 17 hours 65 minutes

= 17 + 60 min + 5 min

= 18 hours and 5 minutes.

If we use 24 hours clock, keep it as it is. If we convert into 12 hour clock, then subtract 18 : 05 and 12 : 00

= 6 : 05

Problem 1 :

Adrian worked for 7 hours 30 minutes on Tuesday. He clocked out at 5 : 00 p.m. At what time did he begin work ?

Solution :

He worked for Tuesday = 7 hours 30 minutes

End of the time = 5 : 00 p.m

Starting time =  7 : 30 -  5 : 00

=  2 : 30

So, he is start the work is 2 : 30 p.m.

Problem 2 :

Bud started work today at 8 : 45 a.m. He worked 8 hours and 20 minutes before leaving for the day. At what time did  Bud finish work today ?

Solution :

He is started work in today = 8 : 45 a.m.

He is worked that day = 8 hours and 20 minutes

End Time = 8 : 45 + 8 : 20

 =  16 : 65

= 17 : 05

Converting into 12 hour clock,

= 17 : 05 - 12 : 00

= 5 : 05

So, he finishes his work at 5 : 05 pm

Problem 3 :

Seth forgot to punch in when he began work today. He knew he finished his work in exactly 6 hours and 30 minutes at 3 : 15 p.m. What time did he begin work ?

Solution :

Converting into 24 hours clock,

= 12 : 00 + 3 : 15

= 15 : 15

From this time, we have to reduce 6 hours and 30 minutes.

= 15 : 15 - 6 : 30

So, he starts his work at 8 : 45 am.

Problem 4 :

Dirk clocked in at his job at 8 : 40 a.m, He worked for 8 hours 45 minutes. At what time did he finish work that day?

Solution :

He is started work time = 8 : 40 a.m.

He is worked time =  8 hours 45 minutes

End Time = 8 : 45 + 8 : 40

= 16 : 85

= 16 hours + 60 minutes + 25 minutes

= 17 hours and 25 minutes (17 : 25)

Converting into 12 hours clock,

= 17 : 25 - 12 : 00

= 5 : 25

So, he will finish his work at 5 : 25 pm.

Problem 5 :

Edgar logged 7 hours 45 minutes at work yesterday. If he finished at 4 : 30 p.m.,  at what time did he begin ?

Solution :

Converting into 24 hours clock,

= 12 : 00 + 4 : 30

= 16 : 30

From this time, we have to go back 7 hours and 45 minutes.

= 16 : 30 - 7 : 45

So, at 8 : 50 am he starts his work.

Problem 6 :

Ferdinand  started out  on his vacation last Thursday at 5 : 15 a.m. He drove for 14 hours 35 minutes before stopping for the night. At what time did he stop ?

Solution :

Started vacation last Thursday = 5 : 15 a.m.

From 5 : 15 am to 5 : 15 pm, it can be covered with 12 hours.

5 : 15 to 6 : 15 and 6 : 15 to 7 : 15 = 2 hours

= 7 : 15 + 35 minutes

= 7 : 50

So, he will stop his work at 7 : 50 pm.

Stopping  time = 14 hours 35 minutes

= 14: 35 - 5 : 15

= 09 : 20

So, 9 hours and 20 minutes did he stop.

Problem 7 :

Grady checked out of work at 10 : 05 p.m after working 6 hours and 45 minutes. When did he check in for work that day ?

Solution :

Leaving time = 10 : 05 p.m

From here we have to go back 6 hours and 45 minutes.

= 10 : 05 - 6 : 45

He checked in at 3 : 20 am.

Problem 8 :

Howard took 5 hours 15 minutes to work his shift  at the Peking Duck Company. He started his work at 9 : 50 a.m. At what time did he finish work that day?

Solution :

Duration of the work = 5 hours 15 minutes

He started his work at 9 : 50 am

He will be working continuously for 5 hours and 15 minutes to complete his work.

End Time = 9 : 50 + 5 : 15

= 14 : 65

= 14 + 60 minutes + 5 minutes

= 15 hours and 5 minutes.

Converting into 12 hour clock,

= 15 : 05 - 12 : 00

= 3 : 05

So, he will finish his work at 3 : 05.
