WORD PROBLEMS ON DIVIDING DECIMALS BY WHOLE NUMBERS

Solution :

By observing the answer, it is clear that the decimal is move one digit forward. 

$6.50 × $10= $65

So, the missing factor is 10.

Wyatt had $73.85. He wants to divide this amount evenly between himself and four of his friends. How much should each person get ?

Solution :

Total money = $73.85

Total person = 5

= 73.85 ÷ 5

= $14.77

So, each person get the money is $14.77.

Problem 3 :

If Michelle solved the following problem, what would be the correct answer ?

8.54 ÷ 0.7 = 

Solution :

8.54 ÷ 0.7 = 12.2

So, the correct answer is 12.2.

Problem 4 :

Mrs. Phillips bought 1.5 pounds of ground beef from Kroger. She paid a total of $6.75 for the ground beef. What was the price per pound ?

Solution :

Mrs. Phillips bought 1.5 pounds.

She paid a total amount =  $6.75

= 6.75/1.5

= 4.5

One pound of ground beef costs $4.5.

It took Mr.Phillips 1.6 hours to run the 13.2 miles. What was his average speed ?

Solution :

Time = 1.6 hours

Distance = 13.2 miles

Speed = Distance/time

= 13.2/1.6

= 8.25

So, average speed is 8.25.

How many nickels are in $24.00 ?

Solution :

1 dollars is equals to 20 nickels.

24 dollars = 24 × 20

= 480

24 dollars is equals to 480 nickels.

There are 480 nickels in $24.00.

Jason spent $20.00 for school lunches. If each lunch of $2.50, how many lunches did he buy ?

Solution :

Jason spent the money = $20.00

If each lunch cost =  $2.50.

 Number of lunches = $20.00/$2.50

= $8

Jason bought 8 lunches.

Problem 8 :

Kevin and his three best friends went to a Jacksonville Jaguars game.  The cab ride from the hotel, to the stadium costs $1.85 per person. In addition, the cab ride will ride will cost $1.15 per 0.5 mile. The total distance from the hotel to the stadium is two miles. How much would each person pay if they split the cost evenly ?

Solution :

Number of friends = 4

Stadium costs = $1.85 per person

The cab ride will ride will cost $1.15 per 0.5 mile.

Total distance from the hotel to the stadium = 2 miles

= $1.85 + $1.15

= $3

So, each person pay if they split the cost evenly is 3.

Problem 9 :

The Henry family drove 276.5 miles on the family vacation. They used 7.9 gallons of gas.How many miles per gallon of gas did they get on the trip.

Solution :

Distance = 276.5 miles

Time = 7.9 gallons

Speed = Distance/time

= 276.5/7.9

= 35 gallons

35 gallon of gas did they get on the trip.

The fifth graders took a trip to the Atlanta Zoo. Eighty - three kids went on the field trip. Adult tickets were free.We had to pay a $5.00 parking fee. Our total bill for entering the park was $586.00. How much was the entrance fee for each child ?

Solution :

Eighty - three kids went on the field trip.

Parking fees = $5.00

Entrance fees = $586.00

586 - 5 = 581

= 581/83

 = 7

So, the entrance fee for each child is $7.

Problem 11 :

Leroy spent a total of $18.00 on rides at the county fair. Each ride cost $1.50. How many rides did Leroy go on at the fair ?

Solution :

Total cost =  $18.00

Each ride cost = $1.50

= 18/1.5

= 12

So, 12 rides did Leroy go on at the fair.

Problem 12 :

The meal costs $52.95 for 5 people.Jenna ordered a dessert for $2.50. If Jenna deducts this amount from the total, how much will each of the other people pay for their meal ?

Solution :

Meal costs = $52.95

Number of people = 5

Jenna ordered a dessert for $2.50

Jenna deducts this amount from the total = $52.95 - $2.50

= $50.45

= 50.45/5

= 10.09

So, the other people pay for their meal is $10.09.

Problem 13 :

A 12 - pack of Cokes costs $5.40. How much does each Coke cost ?

Solution :

Number of pack  =12

Cokes costs = $5.40

= 5.40/12

= 0.45

Each Coke cost is 0.45.

Problem 14 :

Mrs.Henry purchased 14 gallons of gas for $34.72. How much did each gallon cost ?

Solution :

Mrs.Henry purchased 14 gallons of gas for $34.72.

= 34.72/14

= 2.48

Each gallon cost is 2.48.

Problem 15 :

The five fifth grade teachers and six fourth grade teachers ordered 2 large pizzas all together for lunch. Each pizza costs 13.75. If we are going to split the cost evenly, how much will each person need to pay ?

Solution :

Fifth grade teachers = 5

Fourth grade teachers = 6

Total teachers = 5 + 6 = 11

Number of pizzas = 2

Each pizza costs = $13.75

Total cost = 2 × 13.75 

= 27.5

Split the cost evenly = 27.5/11 

= 2.5

So, each person need to pay is 2.5.

Problem 16 :

How long is each side of a square with a perimeter of 12.32 centimeters ?

Solution :

A square has 4 equal sides.

Perimeter of a square = 4 × side

12.32 = 4 × side

side = 12.32/4

= 3.08

So, length of the each side is 3.08 cm.

Problem 17 :

Jonathan and Anna have to share $20.64 evenly for Fall Festival. How much money will each child receive ?

Solution :

Total members = 2

Share amount = $20.64

= 20.64/2

= 10.32

Each child receive the money is $10.32.
