WORD PROBLEMS INVOLVING CALCULATING GROSS PAY

Find the gross pay for each story problem.

Problem 1 :

Harriet earned $7.75 per hour and works 40 hours each week. How much does she earn per week ?

Solution :

In each week she works 40 hours.

For working 1 hour, she gets $7.75.

For working 40 hours, she gets

= $(7.75 × 40)

= $310

She earns $310 per week.

Problem 2 :

Cathy earns $15 per hour and worked 36 hours last week. How much did she earn last week ?

Solution :

In last week she works 36 hours. 

For working 1 hour, she gets $15. Number of hours she is working = 36

= $(15 × 36)

= $540

she will earn $540.

Problem 3 :

Alan earns $11.85 per hour. This week, due to company cut backs, he worked only 12 hours. How much did he earn ?

Solution :

He worked only 12 hours.

For working 1 hour, he gets $11.85.

For working 12 hours, he gets

= $(11.85 × 12)

= $142.2

He earns $142.2.

Problem 4 :

Vic worked 37.5 hours last week at a job that pays $6,25 per hour. What was he gross pay ?

Solution :

Pay per hour  =  $6.25

Worked for 37.5 hours.

pay for 6.25 hours = 37.5  × 6.25

=  234.375


So, the gross pay is $234.375

Problem 5 :

Perry worked 17 hours at a job that pays $8.80 per hour. How much did he earn ?

Solution :

Pay per hour  =  $8.80

Perry worked for 17 hours.

pay for  8.80 hours = 8.80  × 17

=  149.6

he earns $149.6.

Problem 6 :

Hamilton receives $9.25 per hour to work for the city. Last week he worked 38 hours. How much did he earn ?

Solution :

Hamilton receives = $9.25 per hour

He worked 38 hours.

Amount he is receiving for 9.25 hours = 9.25  × 38

=  351.5

So, he will earn $351.5.

Problem 7 :

Burton works at the drive - in movie for $5.50 an hour.  He worked 40 hours this past week. What is his gross pay ?

Solution :

Pay per hour  =  $5.50

He worked 40 hours.

pay for 5.50 hours = 5.50 × 40

= 220

he gross pay is $220.

Problem 8 :

Dolly earns $14.70 per hour working at the mall. She put in 25 hours last week. How much did she earn ?

Solution :

She worked only 25 hours.

For working 1 hour, she gets $14.70.

For working 25 hours, she gets

= $(14.70 × 25)

= $367.5

She gets $367.5.

Problem 9 :

Molly earns $35 per hour working as a private tutor. If she worked 7.5 hours last week, How much did she earn ?

Solution :

She worked 7.5 hours.

For working 1 hour, she gets $35.

For working 7.5 hours, she gets

= $(7.5 × 35)

= $262.5.

She earns $262.5.

Problem 10 :

Holly worked at Fischer's Drive - in and was paid at  a rate of $6.85 per hour. If she worked for 28 hours last week, how much did she earn ?

Solution :

Pay per hour  =  $6.85.

She worked 28 hours.

pay for  6.85 hours = 6.85  × 28

=  191.8

The amount she earns $191.8.
