TAX TIP AND DISCOUNT WORD PROBLEMS 7TH GRADE

Problem 1 :

$75 pair of UGG boots with 5 % sales tax. What is the amount of tax? What is the total price paid ?

Solution :

Price of pair of UGG boots = $75

Sales tax charged = 5%

Amount of tax = 5% of 75

= 0.05 x 75

= 3.75

Total price to be paid = 75 + 3.75

= $78.75

Problem 2 :

A family pays $34.56 for souvenirs on vocation. If the sales tax is 7.5%, what is the amount of tax that the family paid ?

What is the total that the family spent of souvenirs ?

Solution :

Amount spends for souvenirs = $35.56

Sales tax = 7.5% of 35.56

= 0.075 x 35.56

= 2.667

Sales tax = $2.6

Total amount = 35.56 + 2.6

= $37.56

Problem 3 :

Beth buys a box of cereal for $2.45, a loaf of bread for $0.75, and 2 apples for $12. The sales tax is 6%, what is the total cost including tax ?

Solution :

Cost of cereal = $2.45

Cost of loaf of bread = $0.75

Cost of 2 apples = $12

Total cost = 2.45 + 0.75 + 12

= $15.2

Sales tax = 6%

Total amount including tax = (100 + 6)% of 15.2

= 106% of 15.2

= 1.06 x 15.2

= 16.112

So, the required amount including tax is $16.11

Problem 4 :

You went shopping at Best Buy and bought a new ipod. If the subtotal was $249.99 how much would the tax be ? If the tax is 5%. How much would the Ipod cost ?

Solution :

Cost of Ipod = $249.99

Tax = 5%

Cost of Ipod including tax = 105% of 249.99

= 1.05 x 249.99

= 262.48

Problem 5 :

Ryan needs to buy a new hoodie. The ticket price of the hoodie was $65. After the sales tax added, the final cost was $74.25. What percent sales tax did Ryan pay on his hoodie ?

Solution :

Price of ticket = $65

Let x% be the sales tax.

65 + x% of 65 = 74.25

x% of 65 = 74.25 - 65

x% of 65 = 9.25

(x/100) x 65 = 9.25

x = 9.25 x (65/100)

x = 6.0125

So, the required percentage is 6%.

Problem 6 :

Dinner at Red Lobster was $65.13. If you leave a 22% tip, how much is the tip ?

Solution :

Cost of Red Lobster = $65.13

Percentage of tip = 22%

Amount that he spent for tip = 22% of 65.13

= 0.22(65.13)

= $14.32

Problem 7 :

Andrew is buying a cell phone that has a regular price of $185. The cell phone is on sale for 35% off the regular price. What will be the sale price ?

Solution :

Regular price of the cell phone = $185

Offer = 35%

Sale price = (100 - 35) % of 185

= 65% of 185

= 0.65 x 185

= $120.25

Problem 8 :

Shannon bought a new shirt for $8.50 at target. If the original price was $13.50, what % of discount did she receive ?

Solution :

Cost of new shirt = $8.50

Original price = 13.50

13.50 - x% of 13.50 = 8.50

13.50 - 8.50 = x% of 13.50

5 = x% of 13.50

5 = x% x 13.50

x% = 5/13.50

x% = 0.37

So, the answer is 37%.

Problem 9 :

Micaela must pay 10% tax to her new car. If her car is $19000, what is the total price of her purchase ?

Solution :

Purchase price including tax = 110% of 19000

= 1.10 (19000)

= $20900

Problem 10 :

Justin and his friend Dan went to the movies. If each bought popcorn for $4.25 and a soda of $2.25, what was their total bill after adding 5% sales tax ?

Solution :

Price of popcorn = $4.25

Price of soda = $2.25

Price of the items = 2(4.25 + 2.25)

= 2(6.5)

= 13

Sales tax = 5%

Price including the tax = 105% of 13

= 1.05 (13)

= $13.65
