SOLVING ONE STEP EQUATIONS WITH DECIMALS

To solve equations with decimals, we should know about inverse operations.

  • Inverse operation of addition is subtraction.
  • Inverse operation of subtraction is addition.
  • Inverse operation of multiplication is division.
  • Inverse operation of division is multiplication.

In the following exercises, solve the equation.

Problem 1 :

y + 2.9 = 5.7

Solution :

The inverse operation of addition is subtraction. So, subtract 2.9 from both sides.

y + 2.9 – 2.9 = 5.7 – 2.9

Simplify,

y = 2.8

Problem 2 :

m + 4.6 = 6.5

Solution :

In the given work, since we have -1.5 in order ot remove it, we have to add 1.5 on both sides.

Solving it correctly :

k = 8.2 + 1.5

k = 9.7

So, the correct value of k is 9.7

Problem 14 :

A gym teacher orders 42 tennis balls. Each package contains 3 tennis balls. Which of the following equations represents the number x of packages?

a)  x + 3 = 42     b)  3x = 42       c)  x/3 = 42      d)  x = 3/42

Solution :

Number of tennis balls = 42

Number of balls in each package = 3

Let x be the number of packages.

Number of packages · number of balls in each package = 42

x · 3 = 42

3x = 42

So, option b is correct.

Problem 15 :

You clean a community park for 6.5 hours. You earn $42.25. How much do you earn per hour?

Solution :

Let x be the amount you are earning per hour.

Number of hours working = 6.5 hours

Total amount you earn = $42.25

Number of hours working · earninign per hour = 42.25

6.5 · x = 42.25

x = 42.25/6.5

x = 6.5

So, the amount you are earning per hour is $6.5

Problem 16 :

A rocket is scheduled to launch from a command center in 3.75 hours. What time is it now?

Solution :

Let x be the required time.

3 hours and 0.75 hours To convert 0.75 hours into minutes, we use the following conversion.

1 hour = 60 minutes

0.75 hours = 0.75 x 60

= 45 minutes

So, 3.75 hours is 3 hours and 45 minutes.

To get the time now, we have to subtract 3 : 45 hours from 11 : 20 hours.

= 11 : 20 - 3 : 45

= 10 : 80 - 3 : 45

= 7 : 35

So, the time now is 7 : 35 am

Problem 17 :

After earning interest, the balance of an account is $420. The new balance is 7/6 of the original balance. How much interest did it earn?

Solution :

Balance of an account = $420

New balance = 7/6 of original balance

= 7/6 of 420

= (7/6) x 420

= 7 x 70

= 490

So, the intrest is $490.
