SOLVING ONE STEP EQUATIONS WITH DECIMALS

To solve equations with decimals, we should know about inverse operations.

  • Inverse operation of addition is subtraction.
  • Inverse operation of subtraction is addition.
  • Inverse operation of multiplication is division.
  • Inverse operation of division is multiplication.

In the following exercises, solve the equation.

Problem 1 :

y + 2.9 = 5.7

Solution :

The inverse operation of addition is subtraction. So, subtract 2.9 from both sides.

y + 2.9 – 2.9 = 5.7 – 2.9

Simplify,

y = 2.8

Problem 2 :

m + 4.6 = 6.5

Solution :

The inverse operation of addition is subtraction. So, subtract 4.6 from both sides.

m + 4.6 – 4.6 = 6.5 – 4.6

By subtracting, we get

m = 1.9

Problem 3 :
