SOLVING MULTI STEP WORD PROBLEMS 3rd GRADE

Problem 1 :

On Sunday i spent 114 minutes on my art project, and 45 minutes on my numeracy homework. On Thursday evening i spent a total of 111 minutes on my homework. What is the difference between the time i spent doing my homework on Sunday and Thursday evening ?

Solution :

Time taken for art project = 114 minutes

Time taken for numeracy homework = 45 minutes

Time taken for Thursday evening = 111 minutes

Difference between time taken on Sunday and Thursday evening = (114 + 45) - 111

= 159 - 111

= 48 minutes

Problem 2 :

Dad drives a truck. last week he drove 267 miles on Monday, 186 on Tuesday and 198 on Wednesday. This week Dad drove 282 miles in total. What is the difference in mileage between this week and last week ?

Solution :

Number of miles driven last week = (267 + 186 + 198)

= 651

Number of miles driven this week = 282 miles

Difference between these two quantities = 651-282

= 369 miles

Problem 3 :

One watch costs 98 p, and i bought four. If i paid with a £10 note, how much change did i receive ?

Solution :

Cost of 1 watch = 98 pence

Cost of four watches = 98 x 4

= 392 pence

Converting into pounds, we get

= £3.92

Amount i give to the shop keeper = £ 10

Change i should receive = 10 - 3.92

£6.08

Problem 4 :

There are 12 eggs in each tray i bought 9 trays. I used 3 trays of eggs this weekend, how many individual eggs do i have left now ?

Solution :

Number of trays i bought = 9

Number of eggs in each tray = 12

Number of trays i have used = 3

Total number of individual eggs i have bought = 12(9)

= 108

Total number of eggs i have used = 3(12)

= 36

Number of eggs left now = 108 - 36

= 72

Problem 5 :

I need to buy enough whiteboards for 172 students and there are 25 in a pack. When the packs arrive 12 whiteboards are damaged. How many white boards are undamaged ?

Solution :

Number of white needed for total number of students = 172

Each pack will consist of 25 white boards

Number of packs to be bought out = 172 / 25

= 6.8

So, approximately he should purchase 7 packs

= 7 x 25

= 175 white boards

In which 12 white boards are damaged

The number of white boards which are good = 175 - 12

= 163

Problem 6 :

At a fabric shop i bought 238 meters of orange fabric, 100 meters of yellow fabric and 267 meter of purple fabric.

I have used 15 meters of orange fabric, 25 meters of yellow fabric and 7 meters of purple fabric. How many meters of fabric do i have left in total ?

Solution :

Quantity of each color of fabric i have purchased :

Orange = 238 meters

yellow = 100 meters

purple = 267

Number of meters i have used in each color :

Orange = 15

yellow = 25

purple = 7

Quantity of fabric i have left

= (238 - 15) + (100 - 25) + (267 - 7)

= 223 + 75 + 260

= 558 meters

Problem 7 :

I got £48.50 for my birthday. I spent £12.50 on Saturday and £19.20 on Sunday. How much spending money i got left ?

Solution :

Worth of birthday gift = £48.50

Value of money i spent = (12.50 + 19.20)

= 31.7

Amount i have left with = 48.50 - 31.7

£16.8

Problem 8 :

Mum arrived at Grandma's house at 7:55 am. My brother had set off at 7 : 20 am and arrived at Gradma's house 15 minutes after Mum. How long did it take him to get there ?

Solution :

Mum arrived at 7 : 55 am

Brother started at 7 : 20 am

It take 15 minutes after Mum, so he will reach at 7 : 35 am

Difference between these two timings = 7 : 55 - 7 : 20

= 0 : 35

35 minutes.

Problem 9 :

Sally bought 3 photograph frames each costing £7.55. She paid with £30. How much did she get ?

Solution :

Cost of each frame = £7.55

Cost of 3 frames = 3(7.55)

= 22.65

Amount she had paid = £30

She will get = 30 - 22.65

= £7.35

Problem 10 :

I walk 3000 m every day. How many days would it take me to walk 273 km ?

Solution :

Converting km to m,

1 km = 1000 m

273 km = 273 x 1000

= 273000 m

Number of meters covered by him = 3000

Number of days taken by him to cover the above distance

= 273000/3000

= 91 days
