SOLVE MULTISTEP WORD PROBLEMS 4TH GRADE

Problem 1 :

Sally and Joshua have the same amount of money.

Joshua pays $9.10 for a bag and has $16.25 left.

Sally buys a pen and has $19.60 left.

How much does the pen cost?

Solution :

Amount Sally has = Amount Joshua has

Joshua has :

Amount pays for bag = 9.10

Amount left over = 16.25

Amount Joshua has = 9.10 + 16.25

= 25.35

Sally has :

Amount pays for pen = x

Amount left over = 19.60

Amount Sally has = x + 19.60

x + 19.60 = 25.35

x = 25.35 - 19.60

x = 5.75

Cost of pen is $5.75.

Problem 2 :

Isaac buys a block of cheese for $5.70, a bottle of olive oil for $11.25, and a package of frozen chicken wings for $18.99. Isaac gives the cashier three $10 bills, two $5 bills, and four $1 bills. How much change will Isaac get in return?

Solution:

Cheese = $5.70

Olive oil = $11.25

Chicken wings = $18.99

Isaac spent = $5.70 + $11.25 + $18.99

= $35.94

Isaac paid = $30 + $10 + $4

= $44

Change = $44 - $35.94

= $8.06

Isaac will get $8.06 in change.

Problem 3 :

Mr. Lim buys a sweater, a handbag, and a watch.

The sweater costs $108.90.

The handbag costs $60.30 less than the sweater.

The watch costs $50.50 more than the sweater.

Mr. Lim receives $33.10 in change.

How much did Mr. Lim pay the cashier?

Solution:

Given, Cost of sweater = $108.90

Cost of Handbag = $108.90 - $60.30

Cost of Handbag = $ 48.60

Cost of Watch = $108.90 + $50.50

Cost of Watch = $159.40

Total cost = $108.90 + $48.60 + $159.40

= $316.90

Paid = total cost + change

= $316.90 + $33.10

= $350.00

Mr. Lim paid the cashier $350.

Problem 4 :

A pair of jeans costs $89. A jean jacket costs twice as much. What is the total cost of jean jacket and 4 pairs of jeans?

Solution :

A pair of jeans costs = $89

The cost of the jeans jacket = 2 × 89

= $178

4 pair of jeans cost = 4 × 89

= $356

Total cost = $178 + $356

= $534

Problem 5 :

Sarah bought a shirt on sale for $35. The original price of the shirt was 3 times that amount. Sarah also bought a pair of shoes on sale for $28. The original price of the shoes was 5 times that amount. Together, how much money did the shirt and shoes cost before they went on sale?

Solution :

The original price of the shirt = 35 × 3

= $105

The original price of the shoes = 28 × 5

= $140

The total price = $105 + $140

= $245

So, the shirt and shoes cost $245 before they were on sale.

Problem 6 :

All 3,000 seats in a theater are being replaced. So far, 5 sections of 136 seats and a sixth section containing 348 seats have been replaced. How many more seats do they still need to replace?

Solution :

The number has been replaced = (5 × 136) + 348

= 680 + 348

= 1028 seats

And 3000 - 1028

= 1972 seats

They still need to replace 1972 seats.

Problem 7 :

Computer Depot sold 762 reams of paper. Paper palace sold 3 times as much paper as computer Depot and 143 reams more than Office supply central. How many reams of paper were sold by all three stores combined?

Solution :

Paper palace sold = 3 × 762

= 2286

Office supply central sold = 2286 - 143

= 2143

Total = 762 + 2286 + 2143

= 5191

5191 reams of paper were sold by all three stores combined.
