PROBLEMS ON OPERATIONS WITH WHOLE NUMBERS

Problem 1 :

A fighter jet travels at 1000 km per hour. How long will it take the jet to fly non-stop for 1000000 km ?

Solution :

Speed of Jet = 1000 km/hr

Time = Distance / speed

Distance covered = 1000000 km

Time taken to cover the above distance = 1000000/1000

= 1000 hours

Problem 2 :

How long would a car, travelling non - stop at 100 kilometers per hour, take to travel a million kilometers ?

Solution :

Speed of the car = 100 kilometers

1 million kilometer = 1000000

Time = Distance / speed

Time = 1000000/100

= 10000 hours

So, it will take 10000 hours to cover 1 million kilometers.

Problem 3 :

Carlos lifted five 18 kg bags of potatoes onto a truck. How many kg of potatoes did he lift altogether ?

prob-on-opr-with-whole-numbers-q3

Solution :

Number of bags of potatoes = 5

Weight of each bag = 18

Total weight = 5 × 18

= 90 kg

So, he lifted 90 kg potatoes.

Problem 4 :

My three brothers and I received a gift of $320. If we share the money equally amongst ourselves, how much will each person receive ?

Solution :

Worth of gift = $320

Number of persons is getting equal share = 4

= 320/4

= 80

Each person will receive $80.

Problem 5 :

A relay team of nine people took 738 minutes to complete a charity relay race. If each team member ran for exactly the same time, for how long did each team member run ?

prob-on-opr-with-whole-numbers-q5

Solution :

Time taken to complete a relay race = 738 minutes

Number of persons participating = 9

Each team member is taking the same time.

Time taken by each member = 738/9

= 82 minutes

Problem 6 :

This math textbook is 245 mm long. If I put 10 books end to end, how far would the stretch ?

Solution :

Length of each math book = 245 mm

Number of books i am arranging end to end = 10

= 245 x 10

= 2450 mm

So, 2450 mm far would the stretch.

Problem 7 :

24 people each travelled 28 km to play sport. How far did they travel in total ?

Solution :

Number of people participating = 24

Distance covered by each = 28 km

Total distance covered = 24 × 28

= 672 km

Hence they are 672 km far traveled in total.

Problem 8 :

If I write 8 words per minute, how long will it take me to write 648 words ?

Solution :

Number of words i am writing in one minute = 8 words

Number of words i am writing = 648 words

Time taken to complete 648 words

= Number of words/time spent for each word

= 648/8

= 81

So, it will take 81 minutes to complete 648 words.

Problem 9 :

How long would a motor cyclist, riding non - stop at 50 kilometers per hour, take to travel one million kilometers ?

Solution :.

Speed of motor cyclist = 50 kilometer per hour.

Time = Distance / speed

Take to travel one million kilometers.

= 1000000/50

= 20000

Hence, 20000 hours take to travel in one million km.

Problem 10 :

A sporting ground has a capacity of 50000 people. How many capacity crowds would be needed so that 1000000 people will have visited the ground ?

Solution :

A sporting ground has a capacity of 50000 people.

Number of people have visited the ground = 1000000

= 1000000/50000

Number of crowds = 20
