PLOT COMPLEX NUMBERS IN AN ARGAND DIAGRAM

Plot each complex number and find its absolute value.

Problem 1 :

z = 4i

Solution:

To plot a complex number on the Argand diagram, the real number on the horizontal axis, and then the imaginary number on the vertical axis.

So, the number z = 4i, corresponds to the point (0, 4) on the Argand plane.

By using absolute formula,

|a+ib|=a2+b2Here a=0 and b =4|0+4i|=02+42=16=4

So, the absolute value of 4i is 4.

Problem 2 :

z = 3i

Solution:

The number z = 3i, corresponds to the point (0, 3) on the Argand plane.

By using absolute formula,

|a+ib|=a2+b2Here a=0 and b=3|0+3i|=02+32=9=3

So, the absolute value of 3i is 3.

Problem 3 :

z = 3

Solution:

The number z = 3, corresponds to the point (3, 0) on the Argand plane.

By using absolute formula,

|a+ib|=a2+b2Here a=3 and b=0|3+0i|=32+02=9=3

So, the absolute value of 3 is 3.

Problem 4 :

z = 4

Solution:

The number z = 4, corresponds to the point (4, 0) on the Argand plane.

By using absolute formula,

|a+ib|=a2+b2Here a=4 and b=0|4+0i|=42+02=16=4

So, the absolute value of 4 is 4.

Problem 5 :

z = 3 + 2i

Solution:

The number z = 3 + 2i, corresponds to the point (3, 2) on the Argand plane.

By using absolute formula,

|a+ib|=a2+b2Here a=3 and b=2|3+2i|=32+22=9+4=13

So, the absolute value of 3 + 2i is √13.

Problem 6 :

z = 2 + 5i

Solution:

The number z = 2 + 5i, corresponds to the point (2, 5) on the Argand plane.

By using absolute formula,

|a+ib|=a2+b2Here a=2 and b=5|2+5i|=22+52=4+25=29

So, the absolute value of 2 + 5i is √29.

Problem 7 :

z = 3 - i

Solution:

The number z = 3 - i, corresponds to the point (3, -1) on the Argand plane.

By using absolute formula,

|a+ib|=a2+b2Here a=3 and b=-1|3-i|=32+(-1)2=9+1=10

So, the absolute value of 3 - i is √10.

Problem 8 :

z = 4 - i

Solution:

The number z = 4 - i, corresponds to the point (4, -1) on the Argand plane.

By using absolute formula,

|a+ib|=a2+b2Here a=4 and b=-1|4-i|=42+(-1)2=16+1=17

So, the absolute value of 4 - i is √17.

Problem 9 :

z = -3 + 4i

Solution:

The number z = -3 + 4i, corresponds to the point (-3, 4) on the Argand plane.

By using absolute formula,

|a+ib|=a2+b2Here a=-3 and b=4|-3+4i|=(-3)2+42=9+16=25=5

So, the absolute value of -3 + 4i is 5.

Problem 10 :

z = -3 - 4i

Solution:

The number z = -3 - 4i, corresponds to the point (-3, -4) on the Argand plane.

By using absolute formula,

|a+ib|=a2+b2Here a=-3 and b=-4|-3-4i|=(-3)2+(-4)2=9+16=25=5

So, the absolute value of -3 - 4i is 5.
