PARTIAL PRODUCTS 4TH GRADE

Definition:

Multiplying each digit of a number with each digit of another number where each digit maintains its place value.

When you multiply larger numbers, you often need to break the problem into smaller parts. The products of these smaller parts are called partial products. After you find all the partial products, you can add them together.

Problem 1 :

A flower garden is 67 inches long and 43 inches wide. What is the area of the garden? Explain how the Place Value Section Method is used to solve the problem below.

Solution:

pp-q1

43 × 67 = 2400 + 280 + 180 + 21

43 × 67 = 2881 inches2

So, the area of garden is 2881 inches2.

Problem 2 :

A theater has 39 rows of seats. Each row has 54 seats. How many seats are in the theater? Use the Place Value Sections Method to solve the multiplication problem below.

pp-q2

54 × 39 = 1500 + 120 + 450 + 36

54 × 39 = 2106 seats

So, 2106 seats are in the theater.

Problem 3 :

There are 32 cattle cars on today's train to Detroit. Each car holds 28 cows. How many cows are on the train?

Solution:

ppq3

32 × 28 = 600 + 40 + 240 + 16

32 × 28 = 896 cows

So, 896 cows are on the train.

Problem 4 :

Mr. Brooks is planning to carpet his office. The office is 21 feet long and 52 feet wide. How much carpet does he need if he carpets the entire room?

Solution:

pp-q4

52 × 21 = 1000 + 40 + 50 + 2

52 × 21 = 1092 feet2

Use the Place Value Rows Method to solve each problem.

Problem 5 :

pp-q5

Solution:

pp-q6

28 × 34 = 600 + 80 + 240 + 32

28 × 34 = 952

Problem 6 :

pp-q7

Solution:

pp-q8

59 × 73 = 3500 + 150 + 630 + 27

59 × 73 = 4307

Problem 7 :

Max rode his bike 44 miles every week for 28 weeks. How many miles did he ride altogether?

Solution:

pp-q9

44 × 28 = 800 + 80 + 320 + 32

44 × 28 = 1232 miles

Problem 8 :

Monique wants to cover a watercolor painting with glass. The painting is 25 inches long and 35 inches wide. What is the area of the glass needed for the painting?

Solution:

pp-q10

25 × 35 = 600 + 100 + 150 + 25

25 × 23 = 875 inches2

So,  the area of the glass needed for the painting is 875 inches2.
