OPERATIONS ON DECIMALS WORD PROBLEMS

Problem 1 :

John needed to hang a picture he bought. He drilled a hole ⅜ inch in diameter. The nail he intended to use was 0.5 inch in diameter. Was the hole too small or too large? By how much?

Solution:

He drilled hole = 3/8 cm = 0.375 cm

nail diameter = 0.5 cm

nail diameter > drilled hole

Hence, hole is too small.

Problem 2 :

Elena's Hair Salon uses an average of 5.4 quarts of shampoo per month. If Elena wants to order for the year, how many quarts of shampoo does she need to order?

Solution:

Quantity of shampoo she is using = 5.4 quarts

Number of months per year = 12

Quantity of shampoo that she needs to order

n = 5.4 × 12

n = 64.8

So, 64.8 quarts of shampoo she need to order.

Problem 3 :

XYZ Telephone Company is running an introductory offer on their new long-distance program. The program charges a $10.95 initiation fee, then offers the first ten minutes at $.08 per minute with $.05 per minute for any additional minutes. Sylvester decided to purchase the program in June and made long distance calls that month for the following number of minutes; 24, 13, 18, 45, 22, 34, 10, and 15. How much was his monthly bill for his first month of service?

Solution:

Sylvester's talk time are all not less than 10 minutes.

So, we can have the following formula,

Number of calls made = 8

= 8 x 10.95 + 8 x 10 x 0.08 + 0.05(14+13+8+35+12+24+5)

= 87.6 + 64 + (101 × 0.05)

= 99.05

So, Sylvester's monthly bill for June is $99.05.

Problem 4 :

Bob has $178.74 in is checking account. He wrote checks for $36.52, $18.92 and $25.93. He also deposited $300.00, $100.00, and $205.16. What is the final balance in Bob's checking account?

Solution:

Checking account balance = $178.74

= $36.52 + $18.92 + $25.93

= $81.37

= $178.74 - $81.37

= $97.37

Final balance in Bob's account = 97.37 + 300 + 100 + 205.16

= $702.53

Problem 5 :

A 5/16 inch bolt weighs 0.43 lb. How many bolts are there in a 125 lb. kg?

Solution:

1 bolt Weighs  of given size weighs = 0.43 lb

Total Weight = 125 lb

Number of Bolts in Bag  = Total Weight of Bag / Weight of 1 Bolt

= 125/0.43

= 290 bolts

Problem 6 :

During the first six months of the year, the Busy Bee Printing Company spent the following amounts on paper:

January$470.16February$390.12March$176.77April $200.09May$506.45June$189.21

Solution:

Average monthly expenditure for paper=Total expenditureNumber of month=(470.16+390.12+176.77+200.09+506.45+189.21)6=1932.86=322.13

So, average monthly expenditure for paper is $322.13.

Problem 7 :

The resistance of an armature while it is cold is 0.028 ohm. After running for several minutes, the resistance increases to 1.340 ohms. Find the increase in the resistance of the armature.

Solution:

Resistance of an armature, when it is cold = 0.028 ohm

After running several minutes, the resistance increases by 1.340 ohms.

Now, increased resistance = 0.028 + (0.028 × 1.340)

= 0.028 + 0.03752

= 0.06552 ohm

Problem 8 :

When the Better Builder Company completed a small construction job, they found that the following expenses had been incurred: labor, $672.25; gravel, $86.77; sand, $39.41; cement, $180.96; and bricks, $204.35. What total bill should they give the customer if they want to make a profit of $225 on the job?

Solution:

Total bill = $672.25 + $86.77 + $39.41 + $180.96 + $204.35 + $255

= $1408.74

Hence, total bill Better Builder company should give the customer if they want to make a profit of $225 on the job is $1408.74.

Problem 9 :

A welder finds that 2.083 cu ft. of acetylene gas is needed to make one bracket. How much gas will be needed to make 27 brackets?

Solution:

2.083 : 1 = x : 27

x = (2.083 × 27)

x = 56.241

56.241 cu. ft will be needed to make 27 brackets.
