MULTIPLYING AND DIVIDING DECIMALS BY 10 100 AND 1000

Solve the following.

Problem 1 :

The $146.35 cost of a party was shared by 10 people. How much did each person have to pay ? (Be sure to round your answer to the nearest cent.)

Solution :

Total cost = $146.35

Number of people = 10

The amount that each person pay = 146.35/10

= 14.635

= 14.64

So, each person have to pay the amount is $14.64.

Problem 2 :

537 people attended a $100 dollar a plate fund raising dinner for the NSCC Foundation. How much money did this dinner raise ? 

Solution :

Number of people = 537

Cost of each plate = $100

= 537 × 100

= $53700

Problem 3 :

At the beginning of the month, Jim's bank balance was $275.38. During the month he wrote the following checks : $174.89, $68, and $57.76. He made deposits of $250 and $350. Find his bank balance at the end of the month.

Solution :

Jim bank balance at the beginning of the month = $275.38

Check paid during the month :

1st check : $174.89

2nd check : $ 68

3rd check : $57.76

Deposits of the money = $250 and $350.

Jim bank balance at the end of the month 

= Jim bank balance at the beginning of the month - check amount + deposits money

= $275.38 - $174.89 - $68 - $57.76 + $250 + $350

= $574.73

So, Jim bank balance at the end of the month is $574.73.

Problem 4 :

Rudy drove his car 9,600 miles last year. His total car expenses were $625 for the year. Find the average cost per mile. (Round off your answer to the nearest hundredth)

Solution :

Distance = 9600 miles

Last year, total car expenses = $625

average cost = 625 ÷ 9600

= 0.065

= 0.07

So, the average cost per mile is $0.07.

Problem 5 :

A garden is 33.75 feet long and 21.6 feet wide. Draw a diagram of the garden with the lengths written on all four sides. What is the total distance around the garden ?

Solution :

Length of the garden = 33.75

Wide = 21.6

perimeter-of-a-rectangle

P = 2(l + w)

= 2(33.75 + 21.6)

= 2(55.35)

P = 110.7

So, the total distance around the garden is 110.7.

Divide the following :

Problem 6 :

95.49  ÷ 0.1

Solution :

Given, 95.490.1Multiplying numerator and denominator by 10.= 95.490.1 × 1010= 954.91= 954.9 95.490.1 = 954.9

Problem 7 :

0.007  ÷ 10

Solution :

Given, 0.00710= 0.0007 0.00710 = 0.0007

Problem 8 :

0.006  ÷ 0.001

Solution :

Given, 0.0060.001Multiplying numerator and denominator by 1000.= 0.0060.001 × 10001000= 61= 60.0060.001= 6

Problem 9 :

34.71  ÷ 1000

Solution :

Given, 34.711000= 0.0347134.711000 = 0.03471

Problem 9 :

22.52  ÷ 1000

Solution :

Given, 22.521000= 0.0225222.521000 = 0.02252

Problem 10 :

60.2  ÷ 0.001

Solution :

Given, 60.20.001Multiplying numerator and denominator by 1000.= 60.20.001 × 10001000= 602001= 6020060.20.001= 60200

Problem 11 :

0.6  ÷ 10

Solution :

Given, 0.610= 0.060.610 = 0.06

Problem 12 :

8.84  ÷ 0.01

Solution :

Given, 8.840.01Multiplying numerator and denominator by 100.= 8.840.01 × 100100= 8841= 8848.840.01= 884

Problem 13 :

35.14  ÷ 100

Solution :

Given, 35.14100= 0.351435.14100 = 0.3514

Problem 14 :

0.84  ÷ 100

Solution :

Given, 0.84100= 0.00840.84100 = 0.0084
