MULTIPLYING AND DIVIDING BY POWERS OF 10

By following the steps given below, we can multiply or divide decimal or integers by powers of 10.

In the integer, we have to consider the decimal is at the end.

Step 1 :

In the given decimal, count the number of digits after the decimal.

Step 2 :

Count the number of zeroes in the power of 10.

Step 3 :

If we are multiplying an integer of decimal by the power of 10, we have to move the decimal to the right as the number of digits that we have after the decimal or integer.

Step 4 :

If we are dividing an integer or decimal by the power of 10, we have to move the decimal to the left as the number of digits that we have after the decimal or integer.

Note :

The insufficient digits can be filled with 0.

Complete the following equations :

Problem 1 :

a)  360 x 10 = ______

b)  0.7 x 10 = ______

c)  0.54 x 10 = ______

d)  0.01 x 10 = ______

e)  0.17 x 1000 = ______

Solution :

a)  360 x 10 =

360 can be considered as 360.

Number of digits after the decimal = none

Number of 0's in 10 = 1

So, we have to move the decimal one digit to the right, since there is insufficient digit that can be filled with 0.

So, the answer is 360 x 10 = 3600

b)  0.7 x 10 = ______

Number of digits after the decimal = 1

Number of 0's in 10 = 1

We have to move the decimal one digit to the right.

So, the answer is 0.7 x 10 = 7

c)  0.54 x 10 = ______

Number of digits after the decimal = 2

Number of 0's in 10 = 1

We have to move the decimal one digit to the right.

So, the answer is 0.54 x 10 = 5.4

d)  0.01 x 10 = ______

Number of digits after the decimal = 2

Number of 0's in 10 = 1

We have to move the decimal one digit to the right.

So, the answer is 0.01 x 10 = 0.1

e)  0.17 x 1000 = ______

Number of digits after the decimal = 2

Number of 0's in 1000 = 3

We have to move the decimal two digits to the right. So, the answer is

0.17 x 1000 = 170

Problem 2 :

a)  0.54 x 10 = ______

b)  4.3 x 100 = ______

c)  0.34 x 1000 = ______

d)  0.01 x 1000 = ______

e)  603 x 1000 = ______

Solution :

a)  0.54 x 10 =

Number of digits after the decimal = 2

Number of 0's in 10 = 1

So, we have to move the decimal one digit to the right.

So, the answer is 0.54 x 10 = 5.4

b)  4.3 x 100 = ______

Number of digits after the decimal = 1

Number of 0's in 100 = 2

Number of insufficient digits = 1

So, we have to move the decimal two digits to the right. The insufficient digits can be filled with 0.

So, the answer is 4.3 x 100 = 430

c)  0.34 x 1000 = ______

Number of digits after the decimal = 2

Number of 0's in 1000 = 3

Number of insufficient digits = 1

So, we have to move the decimal three digits to the right. The insufficient digits can be filled with 0.

So, 0.34 x 1000 = 340

d)  0.01 x 1000 = ______

Number of digits after the decimal = 2

Number of 0's in 1000= 3

Number of insufficient digits = 1

So, we have to move the decimal three digits to the right. The insufficient digits can be filled with 0.

So, 0.01 x 1000 = 100

e)  603 x 1000 = ______

We have to consider 603 as 603. Here we have to move the decimal three digits to the right. Since three digits are insufficient, that can be filled with 0

603 x 1000 = 603000
