MIXED OPERATIONS WITH POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE INTEGERS WORKSHEET

Find using order of operations rules :

Problem 1 :

3 + 4 ÷ (-2)

Solution :

= 3 + 4 ÷ (-2)

Using BODMAS rule, first we have to perform division.

= 3 - 2

Subtracting 3 and 2, we get 

= 1

Problem 2 :

-1 + (-3) x 2

Solution :

= -1 + (-3) x 2

Using BODMAS rule, first we have to perform multiplication.

= -1 - 6

Since 1 and 6, we have same signs. Then we have to add and put the larger number sign for the result.

= -7

Problem 3 :

8 + (-2) + 5

Solution :

= 8 + (-2) + 5

First let us simplify the terms which are having same signs.

= 8 + 5 + (-2)

= 13 + (-2)

= 11

Problem 4 :

-3 x (-2) - 4

Solution :

= -3 x (-2) - 4

Using BODMAS rule, we have to multiply the terms.

= 6 - 4

Subtracting 6 and 4, we get

= 2

Problem 5 :

2 - 6 ÷ (-3)

Solution :

= 2 - 6 ÷ (-3)

Using BODMAS rule, we have to divide the terms.

= 2 - 2

Subtracting 2 and 2, we get 0

= 0

Problem 6 :

-2 x 4 + (-7)

Solution :

= -2 x 4 + (-7)

Perform multiplication first 

= -8 + (-7)

Since 8 and 7 are having same signs, we have to add the quantities and use the negative sign for the answer.

= -15

Problem 7 :

7 - 3 x (-3)

Solution :

= 7 - 3 x (-3)

Perform multiplication first 

= 7 + 9

Adding 7 and 9, we get

= 16

Problem 8 :

-4 x (-5) - 12

Solution :

= -4 x (-5) - 12

Perform multiplication first,

= 20 - 12

Subtracting 20 and 12, we get

= 8

Problem 9 :

(-3 + 4) x (-7)

Solution :

= (-3 + 4) x (-7)

First we have to simplify the terms which are inside the bracket first.

= 1 x (-7)

Multiplying 1 and -7, we get 

= -7

Problem 10 :

15 ÷ (4 - 7)

Solution :

= 15 ÷ (4 - 7)

First we have to simplify the terms which are inside the bracket first.

= 15 ÷ (-3)

Dividing 15 by 3, we get

= -5

Problem 11 :

Min's company makes $100 000 profit per month for eight months and then an $80 000 loss for next four months. Find her company's total profit or loss.

Solution :

Profit for a month = $100 000

Total profit for 8 months = 8 (100 000)

Loss for a month = 80 000

Total loss for four months = 4(80 000)

Total profit or loss = 8 (100 000) - 4(80 000)

= 800000 - 320000

= 480 000

Problem 12 :

A computer sales has the following sales record over a six week period.

a) What was store's overall profit or loss for this period ?

b)  What was the store's average weekly profit or loss during this period ?

Solution :

= +388 - 1373 - 179 + 3013 + 832 - 1763

= 388 + 3013 + 832 - (1373 + 179 + 1763)

= 4233 - 3315

= +918

Since the answer is positive, it is profit in total.

b) Total profit is $918.

Problem 13 :

My bank account contains $227 and my fortnightly pay of $540 is added directly in to my bank account. If there are no withdrawals, what is my bank balance after 12 weeks ?

Solution :

Amount that already has in the bank account = $227

Amount to be added = $540

= 227 + 12(540)

= 227 + 6480

= $6707
