Problem 1 :
What is the smallest number you can create using these figures, once each ?
2 6 7 3
Solution :
Using the above 4 digits, we can create a four digit number by arranging the digits from least to greatest.
2 3 6 7
So, the smallest number created with the above digits is 2367
Problem 2 :
What is the largest number you can create using these figures, once each ?
2 5 6 4
Solution :
Using the above 4 digits, we create the largest number by arranging the digits from greatest to least.
6542
So, the largest number created by the above digits is 6542
Problem 3 :
Calculate the following :
(33 + 7) ÷ (14 - 6)
Solution :
= (33 + 7) ÷ (14 - 6)
= 40 ÷ 8
= 5
Problem 4 :
Jimbob buys 9 pairs of laces for his hiking boots.
It costs €19.26 altogether.
How much would 3 pairs of laces cost ?
Solution :
Cost of 9 pairs of laces = €19.26 -----(1)
Cost of 3 pairs of laces :
Dividing each side by 3, we get
= 19.26/3
= € 6.42
Problem 5 :
If 15 x 20 = 300, given the answers to these, without them out to fill.
i) 15 x 21 = ?
ii) 15 x 19 = ?
iii) 300 ÷ 15 = ?
Solution :
15 x 20 = 300
i) 15 x 21 = 15 x (20 + 1)
= 15 x 20 + 15 x 1
= 300 + 15
= 315
ii) 15 x 19 = 15 x (20 - 1)
= 15 x 20 - 15 x 1
= 300 - 15
= 285
iii) 300 ÷ 15
= 20
Problem 6 :
Write these numbers in order of sizing starting with the smallest ?
0.23 2/3 0.029 0.66 25%
Solution :
We have 5 numbers. In this 3 numbers are in the form of decimal. Converting the other also as decimal, we can do the comparison simply.
0.23 2/3 0.029 0.66 25%
2/3 = 0.6666.......
Rounding it, we get 0.67
25% = 25/100 ==> 0.25
Arranging from smallest to largest,
0.029, 0.23, 0.25, 0.67, 0.66
0.029, 0.23, 25%, 2/3, 0.66
Problem 7 :
Here is the list of fractions :
Solution :
Three same fractions are 3/12, 2/8 and 1/4.
Problem 8 :
Jimbob's van carry 192 boxes.
Jimbob has 6240 boxes to move from working to Caterham.
How many journeys must the van make to transport all of these boxes from working to Caterham ?
Solution :
Number of boxes a can carry = 192
Total number of boxes to be moved = 6240
Total number of journey to move all boxes = 6240/192
= 32.5
So, 33 jouneys are required.
Problem 9 :
The table shows the temperature that it went down to overnight in 5 parts of the UK.
What is the the temperature difference between the hottest and coldest places ?
Solution :
Hottest place = Brighton, temperature = +4
Coldest place = Edinburg, temperature = -6
Difference between hottest and coldest = 4 - (-6)
= 4 + 6
= 10
Problem 10 :
I think of a number.
If i multiply it by 3 and then subtract 5.
I get an answer of 16.
What was the number i first thought of ?
Solution :
From 16, we have to go backwards.
Given is subtracting 5, backwards adding 5
= 16 + 5
= 21
Given says multiply by 3, working backwards we have to divide by 3.
= 21/3
= 7
So, the required number is 7.
Problem 11 :
Which number replaces * in this calculation :
Solution :
Since the denominators are equal, comparing the numerators, we get
3* = 9
* = 3
So, the answer is 3.
Problem 12 :
A rectangular field has an area of 72 m2. The length of the field is 9 m. How wide is it ?
Solution :
Area of rectangle = 72 m2
Length = 9 m
Width = ?
Area of rectangle = length x width
9 x w = 72
w = 72/9
w = 8 m
So, the required width is 8 m.
Problem 13 :
Jane went to the super market to buy these items :
1 kg potatoes, 1/2 kg carrots, 1 1/2 kg onions, 2 kg steak and 750 g peas
Work out the total weight of these items :
Solution :
Converting grams to kg, we get
750 g = 3/4 kg
Total weight = 1 + 1/2 + 3/2 + 2 + 3/4
Least common multiple is 4.
= (4 + 2 + 6 + 8 + 3)/4
= 23/4
= 5 3/4 kg
