HOW TO CONVERT IMPROPER FRACTION AND MIXED FRACTION TO DECIMAL

Express in Decimal Form :

Problem 1 :

8  8/10

Solution :

= 8  8/10

By addition form,

= 8 + 8/10

Step 1 :

Here, the denominator is 10, it consists of one zero. Then we move the decimal one digit to the left (backward).

So, 0.8 is the decimal form of 8/10.

Step 2 :

= 8 + 0.8

= 8.8

So, 8.8 is the decimal form of 8  8/10.

Problem 2 :

2  57/100

Solution :

= 2  57/100

By addition form,

= 2 + 57/100

Step 1 :

Here, the denominator is 100, it consists of two zeroes. Then we move the decimal two digit to the left (backward).

So, 0.57 is the decimal form of 57/100.

Step 2 :

= 2 + 0.57

= 2.57

So, 2.57 is the decimal form of 2  57/100.

Problem 3 :

13  18/100

Solution :

= 13  18/100

By addition form,

= 13 + 18/100

Step 1 :

Here, the denominator is 100, it consists of two zeroes. Then we move the decimal two digit to the left (backward).

So, 0.18 is the decimal form of 18/100.

Step 2 :

= 13 + 0.18

= 13.18

So, 13.18 is the decimal form of 13  18/100.

Problem 4 :

1  461/1000

Solution :

= 1  461/1000

By addition form,

= 1 + 461/1000

= 1 + 0.461

= 1.461

So, 1.461 is the decimal form of 1   461/1000.

Problem 5 :

7  41/1000

Solution :

= 7  41/1000

= 7 + 41/1000

Step 1 :

Here, the denominator is 1000, it consists of three zeroes. Then we move the decimal three digit to the left (backward).

So, 0.041 is the decimal form of 41/1000.

Step 2 :

= 7 + 0.041

= 7.041

So, 7.041 is the decimal form of 7  41/1000.

Problem 6 :

3  7/1000

Solution :

= 3  7/1000

By addition form,

= 3 + 7/1000

= 3 + 0.007

= 3.007

So, 3.007 is the decimal form of 3  7/1000.

Problem 7 :

5  6/10000

Solution :

= 5  6/10000

By addition form,

= 5 + 6/10000

= 5 + 0.0006

= 5.0006

So, 5.0006 is the decimal form of 5  6/10000.

Problem 8 :

5  39/1000

Solution :

= 5  39/1000

By addition form,

= 5 + 39/1000

= 5 + 0.039

= 5.039

So, 5.039 is the decimal form of 5  39/1000.

Problem 9 :

648/100

Solution :

= 648/100

Here, the denominator is 100, it consists of two zeroes. Then we move the decimal two digit to the left (backward).

So, 6.48 is the decimal form of 648/100.

Problem 10 :

5666/1000

Solution :

= 5666/1000

Here, the denominator is 1000, it consists of three zeroes. Then we move the decimal three digit to the left (backward).

So, 5.666  is the decimal form of 5666/1000.

Problem 11 :

681/10

Solution :

= 681/10

Here, the denominator is 10, it consists of one zero. Then we move the decimal one digit to the left (backward).

So, 68.1 is the decimal form of 681/10.

Problem 12 :

7061/100

Solution :

= 7061/100

Here, the denominator is 100, it consists of two zeroes. Then we move the decimal two digit to the left (backward).

So, 70.61 is the decimal form of 7061/100.

Problem 13 :

At a party, 10 people equally shared 2 1/2 gallons of ice cream. How much ice cream did each person eat?

Solution :

Number of people = 10

quantity of ice cream = 2  1/2 gallons

Amount of ice cream each person eats = (2  1/2) / 10

= (5/2) / 10

= 5/2 x (1/10)

= 1/4

= 0.25 gallons of ice cream each person will get.

Problem 14 :

You have 23 1/2 pounds of blueberries to store in freezer bags. Each bag holds 3 3/4 pounds of blueberries. What is the minimum number of freezer bags needed to store all the blueberries?

Solution :

Quantity of blueberries = 23  1/2 pounds

Quantity of blue berries in each bag = 3  3/4

Number of freezer bags = 23  1/2 ÷ 3  3/4

= 47/2 ÷ 15/4

= 47/2 x (4/15)

= (47 x 2)/15

= 94/15

= 6.26

So, maximum number of bags needed is 6 bags approximately.

Problem 15 :

A squirrel feeder holds 4 1/2 cups of seeds. Another squirrel feeder holds 6  7/8 cups of seeds. One scoop of seeds is 1 5/8 cups. How many scoops of seeds do you need to fill both squirrel feeders?

Solution :

Capacity of one squirrel feeder = 4   1/2

Capacity of one squirrel feeder = 6   7/8

Capacity of one scoop of seeds = 1  5/8 cups

Number of scoops = (4   1/2 +  6   7/8) ÷ 1  5/8

= (4 + 6 + 1/2 + 7/8) ÷ (13/8)

= 10 + (4 + 7)/8 ÷ (13/8)

= 10 + 11/8 ÷ (13/8)

= (80 + 11)/8 ÷ (13/8)

= 91/8 x 8/13

= 91/13

= 7 scoops.

Problem 16 :

A grocery store sells grapes for $1.99 per pound. You buy 2.34 pounds of the grapes. How much do you pay?

Solution :

Cost per pound of grapes = $1.99

Quantity of grapes you purchase = 2.34 pounds

Amount you should pay = 1.99 x 2.34

= $4.65

Amount you should pay is $4.65
