Problem 31 :

The net of a triangular right prism is shown below.

6th-grade-eog-q32.png

What is the surface area of the prism?

A) 204 in2      B) 228 in2     C) 240 in2      D) 288 in2

Solution :

In the given picture, we have 3 rectangles and 2 triangles.

Area of rectangle = length x width

Area of large rectangle = 8 x 10

= 80 square inches ------(1)

Length = 10 in, width = 5 in

Area of rectangle = 10 x 5

= 50 square inches

Area of 2 rectangles = 2(50)

= 100 square inches ------(2)

Area of triangle = (1/2) x base x height

base = 8 in and height = 3 in

= (1/2) x 8 x 3

= 12 square inches

Area of 2 triangles = 2(12)

= 24 square inches ------(3)

(1) + (2) + (3)

= 80 + 100 + 24

= 204 square inches.

So, option A is correct.

Problem 32 :

The data below represents the numbers of books that twelve students read.

2, 4, 7, 8, 9, 12, 14, 18, 19, 21, 30, 32

Which box plot correctly summarizes the data?

6th-grade-eog-q31p1.png
6th-grade-eog-q31p2.png

Solution :

2, 4, 7, 8, 9, 12, 14, 18, 19, 21, 30, 32

Min = 2, median = (12 + 14)/2 ==> 13

2, 4, 7, 8, 9, 12

Q1 = (7 + 8)/2

= 7.5

14, 18, 19, 21, 30, 32

Q3 = (19 + 21)/2

= 20

Max = 32

So, option C is correct.

Problem 33 :

Which box plot represents a set of data with the largest interquartile range?

6th-grade-eog-q33.png

Solution :

Option A :

IQR = 28 - 23 ==> 5

Option C :

IQR = 29 - 25 ==> 4

Option B :

IQR = 29 - 25 ==> 4

Option D :

IQR = 29 - 22 ==> 7

So, option D is correct.

Problem 34 :

A company that makes boxes finds that 3 out of 20 boxes are damaged. What percent of the boxes are damaged?

A) 12%     B) 15%     C) 25%     D) 34%

Solution :

Number of boxes were damaged = 3

Total number of boxes = 20

Representing as fraction = 3/20

Converting as percentage = (3/20) x 100%

= 15%

Problem 35 :

Jack drew a number line on his paper

6th-grade-eog-q35.png

Jack drew a new point 45% of the distance from point E to point J. Between which two letters does the new point lie?

A) G and H    B) I and J      C) F and G       D) H and I

Solution :

Distance between E to J = 5 units.

45% of 5 units = 0.45(5)

= 2.25

Then the required point will lie in between F and G. So, option C is correct.

Problem 36 :

Valerie is 64 inches tall. About how many centimeters tall is Valerie? (1 inch ≈ 2.5 centimeters)

A)  25.6     B) 30.6      C) 160      D) 180

Solution :

1 inch = 2.5 cm

64 inches = 64(2.5)

= 160

So, option C is correct.

Problem 37 :

Which point on the number line represents the number

- 4  1/2?

6th-grade-eog-q37.png

A)  P     B) Q     C) R     D) S

Solution :

-4   1/2 lie at P.

Problem 38 :

This table shows the number of miles four friends travel to get to school.

6th-grade-eog-q38.png

Who travels the greatest distance to school?

A) Andie     B) Helen     C) Michelle     D) Troy

Solution :

Distance is being represented as mixed fraction. By  converting every fraction with the same denominator, we can compare and decide which fraction is greater.

38,23, 59, 49LCM(8, 3, 9, 9) = 7238 ×99 = 277223×2424 = 487259×88 = 407249×88 = 32724872 is greater

Then Helen is having greatest distance. So, option B is correct.

Problem 39 :

In the coordinate plane, what is the distance between (-3, 5) and (-3, -8)?

A) 3 units     B) 6 units     C) 8 units      D) 13 units

Solution :

Distance = |-8| + |5|

= 13 units

So, option D is correct.

Problem 40 :

Which choice is equivalent to the expression 4(x + 2y)?

A) 4x + 8y     B) 4x + 2y     C) x + 8y     D) 8xy

Solution :

= 4(x + 2y)

Distributing 4, we get

= 4x + 4(2y)

= 4x + 8y

So, option A is correct.
