Write the expanded form of a number.

Solution :

(a) 4871

Standard form : 4871

Expanded form : 4x1000 + 8x100 + 7x10 + 1x1

4000 + 800 + 70 + 1

(b) 68904

Standard form : 68904

Expanded form : 6x10000 + 8x1000 + 9x100 + 0x10 + 4x1

60000 + 8000 + 900 + 0 + 4

(c) 760391

Standard form : 760391

Expanded form : 7x100000 + 6x10000 + 0x1000 + 3x100 + 9x10 + 1x1

700000 + 60000 + 0 + 300 + 90 + 1

Example 2 :

Express the following in simplest form

(a) 90+7  (b) 400+30+6

(c) 8000+4  (d) 5000+600+8

(e)  70000 + 60 + 5  (f)  4000 000 + 900 + 8

Solution :

(a) 90 + 7 = 97

(b) 400+30+6 = 436

(c) 8000+4 = 8004

(d) 500+600+8 = 5608

(In hundred place we have nothing. So, replace it by 0.) 

(e)  70000 + 60 + 5 = 70065

(In thousand's and in hundred's place we have nothing. So , replace it by 0.) 

(f)  4000 000 + 900 + 8 = 4000908
