DIVIDING DECIMALS WORD PROBLEMS

Problem 1 :

How much money would each person get if $76.50 is divided equally among 9 people?

Solution:

Amount to be shared = 76.50

Number of persons = 9

To find the amount that each person will receive, we will divide 76.50 by 9.

= 76.50 / 9

= $8.5

Problem 2 :

A 10.75 kg tub of ice cream is divided equally among 5 people. How much ice cream does each person receive?

Solution:

Quantity of ice cream = 10.75 kg

Number of persons going to receive = 5

Quantity of ice cream each person gets = 10.75/5

= 2.15 kg

Each person will receive 2.15 kg tub of ice cream.

Problem 3 :

A 3.5 m length of timber is cut into five equal pieces. How long is each piece?

Solution:

Length of timber = 3.5 m

Number of pieces to be cut out = 5

Length of each piece = 3.5/5

= 0.7 m

Each piece is 0.7 m.

Problem 4 :

How many 7 kg bags of potatoes can be filled from a bag of potatoes weighing 88.2 kg?

Solution:

Weight of original bag of potatoes = 88.2 kg

Number of bags to be filled with 7 kg weight each = ?

Weight of each smaller bag = 7 kg

Number of bags = 88.2/7

= 12.6

Since the answer represents number of bags, it cannot be decimal. Rounding it as nearest integer, we get 13.

So, 13 bags to be filled.

Problem 5 :

If $96.48 is divided equally among six people, how much does each person receive?

Solution:

Amount to be distributed = $96.48

Number of persons going to receive = 6

Amount received by each person = 96.48/6

= $16.08 

So, each person will receive $16.08. 

Problem 6 :

Share $5885.25 equally amongst 5 people. How much does each person get?

Solution :

Amount to be shared = $5885.25

Number of persons going to receive = 5

Share of each person = 5885.25 / 5

= $1177.05

Each person will get an amount of $1177.05.

Problem 7 :

How much does each person get if $82.40 is divided equally between four people?

Solution :

Amount to be shared = $82.40

Number of persons going to receive = 4

Share of each person = 82.40 / 4

= $20.6

Each person will get an amount of $20.6.

Solution :

So, the required divisor is 1000.

Problem 10 :

If $107.25 is shared equally between 13 people, how much does each receive?

Solution:

Amount to be shared = $107.25

Number of persons going to receive = 13

Share of each person = 107.25 / 13

= $8.25
