CUSTOMARY UNITS OF LENGTH WORD PROBLEMS

Problem 1 :

Nick needs 65 yards of wire for a project. If the wire is only sold on spools that hold 6 feet of wire, how many spools will he need ?

Solution :

length of wire required for the project = 65 yards

1 yard = 3 feet

65 yard = 65 × 3 = 195

length of wire is containing in one spool = 6 feet

195/6 = 32.5

= 33

So, approximately he will need 33 spools.

Problem 2 :

Jessi has 9 feet of blue fabric. To finish making her costume she needs one third of that amount of red fabric. The fabric store sells fabric by the yard. How much fabric does Jessi need to buy ?

Solution :

Length of blue colors fabric = 9 feet

Amount of red fabric = 1/3 × 9

= 3 feet

Total = 12 ft

1 yard = 3 ft

So, Jessi has to buy 1 yard of red fabric.

= 4/3 ×  9

= 12

Jessi needs to buy 12 yards fabric.

Problem 3 :

Jay runs 1 1/2 miles at track practice. Teddy runs the 100-yard dash, and Cadi runs half as far as Jay. How many yards do they run all together ?

Solution :

Jay runs = 1 1/2 miles

1 1/2 miles = 2640 yards

Teddy runs = 100 yard

Cadi runs = 1/2 × 2640

= 1320 yards

Sum of the all yards = 2640 + 100 + 1320

= 4060 yards

So, 4060 yards they run all together.

Problem 4 :

Kelly is hanging shelves in her closet. She can buy shelves for $1.25 a foot. Kelly buys one 5 - foot shelf and a shelf that measures 24 inches. The rest of her materials cost $90. How much change will she get if she pays with $100 ?

Solution :

The 24 inch shelve is 2 feet ( 1 foot = 12 inches)

She bout 7 feet of shelves (5 + 2 = 7)

The total cost for the shelves was 7 x 1.25 = $8.75

She spend an additional 90 so her total spent was 90 + 8.75

= $98.75

Now subtract her total from 100 to find the amount of change:

100 - 98.75 = 1.25

The change was $1.25

Problem 5 :

Paula ran 24 feet with the football and then passed it 15 feet to Newt. Newt ran 70 yards for a touchdown. What was the total number of feet the ball traveled ?

Solution :

Feet of the he ran with the football = 24 feet

Passed the feet = 15 feet

Newt ran 70 yards for a touchdown.

1 yard = 3 feet

70 yard = 70 ×  3 = 210 feet

= 24 + 15 + 210

= 249

So, total number of feet the ball traveled 249 feet.

Problem 6 :

Patrick bought 54 inches of material that costs $3.40 for one yard. What change did he get if he paid for the material with a twenty - dollar bill ?

Solution :

Patrick bought the material = 54 inches

One yard of material costs = $3.40

1 yard = 36 inches

54 inches = 54/36 = 1.5 inches

= 3.40 × 1.5

= 5.10

Patrick paid for the material = $20

= 20 - 5.10

= $14.90
