COMPARING AND ORDERING DECIMALS

Problem 1 :

Place the following numbers in order from least to greatest :

-8.2, 0.4, -2 1/2, 2.4

Solution :

-8.2, 0.4, -2 1/2, 2.4

Converting 2  1/2 as decimal, we get -2.5. Now comparing and arranging can be done.

-8.2, 0.4, -2.5, 2.4

Arranging from least to greatest :

-8.2 < -2 1/2 < 0.4 < 2.4

Problem 2 :

Place a >, <, or = symbol on each line to compare the rational numbers below.

(i) 1.2  ___8/4  (ii) 6.05  ____6.05

Solution :

(i) 1.2 ____8/4

Simplifying 8 by 4, we get 2. So, 1.2 is lesser.

1.2 < 2

(ii) 6.05  _____6.05

Comparing 6.05 and 6.05, they both are same.

6.05 = 6.05

Problem 3 :

Place the following numbers in order from greatest to least :

0.5, -5 1/9, -7.1, 0.9

Solution :

0.5, -5 1/9, -7.1, 0.9

0.5, -5.5, -7.1, 0.9

0.9 > 0.5 > -5 1/9 > -7.1

Problem 4 :

Place a >, <, or = symbol on each line to compare the rational numbers below.

(i) 8.5 _____ 10/5  (ii) 10.2  _____10

Solution :

(i) 8.5 ____10/5

Dividing 10 and 5, we get 2. Comparing 8.5 and 2, 8.5 is greater.

8.5 ____ 2

8.5 > 2

(ii) 10.2 ____10

10.2 is greater than 10

10.2 > 10

Problem 5 :

Place the following numbers in order from least to greatest :

-2.4, -3 3/9, 9.5, 0.2

Solution :

-2.4, -3 3/9, 9.5, 0.2

-2.4, -3.3, 9.5, 0.2

-3 3/9 < -2.4 < 0.2 < 9.5

Problem 6 :

Place a >, <, or = symbol on each line to compare the rational numbers below.

(i) 1.4___-14/7  (ii) 6.8 _____ 8.6

Solution :

(i) 1.4 ____-14/7

Simplifying 14 and 7, we get 2. Comparing positive and negative values, positive value is greater.

1.4 ___-2

1.4 > -2

(ii) 6.8 ____8.6

6.8 < 8.6

Problem 7 :

Place the following numbers in order from greatest to least :

7.4, -4 5/10, 0.2, -7.4

Solution :

7.4, -4 5/10, 0.2, -7.4

7.4, -4.5, 0.2, -7.4

7.4 > 0.2 > -4.5 > -7.4

Problem 8 :

Place the following numbers in order from least to greatest :

-34/4, 4, 0.7, -9.3

Solution :

-8 2/4, 4, 0.7, -9.3

-34, 4, 0.7, -9.3

-9.3 < -34/4 < 0.7 < 4

Problem 9 :

Place the following numbers in order from greatest to least :

0.3, 3.3, -3.3, -3

Solution :

0.3, 3.3, -3.3, -3

3.3 > 0.3 > -3 >-3.3

Problem 10 :

Place a >, <, or = symbol on each line to compare the rational numbers below.

(i)  8.5 ____-8.5   (ii) 0.2 ___0.5

Solution :

(i) 8.5 ____-8.5

Comparing positive and negative values, always positive value is greater.

8.5 > -8.5

(ii) 0.2 ___0.5

0.2 < 0.5
