CALCULATING GROSS PAY WORD PROBLEMS

What is gross pay ?

Whether you are paid a salary, a wage, or any other manner, your income is the amount of money you receive for the work you do.

This income is usually paid weekly, biweekly (every two weeks), semi-monthly (twice a month), monthly, but not usually annually (once a year).

The amount of money you make before any deductions is called your gross pay.

Problem 1 :

Maria works as an electrician and earns $24.68/h. If she worked for 15 hours on one job, how much did she earn?

Solution :

Amount he is earning per hour = $24.68

Total number of hours he is working = 15

Hi total earning = 15(24.68)

= 370.2

So, his earning for 15 hours is $370.2.

Problem 2 :

Last year, Michelle earned $45183.36 at a hair salon. What was her average monthly income?

Solution :

A year consist of 12 months.

His earning for the whole year = 45183.36

His monthly earning = 45183.36/12

= $3765.28

So, his monthly earning is $3765.28

Problem 3 :

Chi works cutting lawns. Last week, he worked 34 hours and earned $329.12. What is his hourly wage?

Solution :

Number of hours he was working = 34

Amount earned = $329.12

Hourly wage = 329.12/34

= 9.68

So, his hourly wage is $9.68.

Problem 4 :

If Sam is paid biweekly and his annual salary last year was $32000, what was his gross pay on each pay cheque?

Solution :

1 year = 52 weeks

The payment is done biweekly means twice a week.

So, number of times giving payment = 52 (2) = 104

To get the gross pay for each pay cheque, we have to divide 32000 by 104.

= 32000/104

= 307.69

Problem 5 :

Harpreet works as a carpenter for $20.87/h. How much will he earn in a 40-hour work week?

Solution :

Hourly charge = 20.87

Number of hours he is working in a week = 40

Amount he is earning per week = 20.87 (40)

= $834.8

Problem 6 :

Ben works in a trucking business and is paid $35.75/h. Last week he worked the following hours:

  • Monday – 6 hours
  • Tuesday – 8 hours
  • Wednesday – 8 hours
  • Thursday – 12 hours

What was his gross pay for this week?

Solution :

Total number of hours he is working per week

= 6 + 8 + 8 + 12

= 34 hours

Earning per hour = $35.75

Gross pay = Total number of hours x earning per week

= 34 x 35.75

= $1215.5

Problem 7 :

Jimmy is a flag person and earned $321.10 last week for 32.5 hours work. What is his hourly wage?

Solution :

His earning = $321.10

Number of hours he is working = 32.5

Hourly wage = 321.10/32.5

= 9.88

So, his hourly wage is $9.88.

Problem 8 :

Martha’s annual salary last year was $72000. What was her gross pay each month?

Solution :

Salary last year = $72000

1 year = 12 months.

Gross pay for each month = 72000/12

= 6000

So, his gross pay each month is $6000.

Problem 9 :

Pavneet’s annual gross pay is $48000. If she is paid biweekly, what is her gross pay on each paycheque?

Solution :

Annual gross pay = 48000

Method of payment = biweekly

Which means twice a week.

Number of time that payment made = 52(2) ==> 104

= 48000/104

= 461.53

So, each pay cheque will be the worth of $461.53.
