401

c) 1,482 added to 915

915 + 1482

2397

d) The sum of 70 and 38

70 + 38

108

e) A total of 593 and 79

593 + 79

672

Problem 2 :

Home remodeling Sophia remodeled her kitchen and bought a new range, microwave, and dishwasher. The range cost $1,100, the microwave cost $250, and the dishwasher cost $525. What was the total cost of these three appliances?

Solution :

Cost of the range = $1100

Cost of the microwave = $250

Cost of the dishwasher = $525

The total cost of three appliances = 1100 + 250 + 525

                                                       = $1875

Problem 3 :

Sports equipment Aiden bought a baseball bat, helmet, and glove. The bat cost $299, the helmet cost $35, and the glove cost $68. What was the total cost of Aiden’s sports equipment?

Solution :

Cost of the bat = $299

Cost of the helmet = $35

Cost of the glove = $68

The total cost of Aiden’s sports equipment = 299 + 35 + 68

                                                                     = $402

Problem 4 :

Bike riding Ethan rode his bike 14 miles on Monday, 19 miles on Tuesday, 12 miles on Wednesday, 25 miles on Friday, and 68 miles on Saturday. What was the total number of miles Ethan rode?

Solution :

His bike ride on Monday = 14 miles

On Tuesday = 19 miles

On Wednesday = 12 miles

On Friday = 25 miles

On Saturday = 68 miles

Total number of miles Ethan rode = 14 + 19 + 12 + 25 + 68

= 138 miles

Problem 5 :

Find the sum by suitable rearrangement :

a) 534 + 100 + 466

b) 365 + 700 + 635

Solution :

a) 534 + 100 + 466

= 500 + 30 + 4 + 100 + 400 + 60 + 6

= (500 + 400 + 100) + (30 + 60) + (4 + 6)

= 1000 + 90 + 10

= 1100

b) 365 + 700 + 635

= 300 + 60 + 5 + 700 + 600 + 30 + 5

= (300 + 700 + 600) + (60 + 30) + (5 + 5)

= 1600 + 90 + 10

= 1700

Problem 6 :

find the value of the following expression using propeties of whole numbers :

a)  4380 x 85 - 4380 x 75

b)  270 x 8 + 270 x 9 + 270

c)  45 x 20 x 5

Solution :

a)  4380 x 85 - 4380 x 75

Factoring 4380,

= 4380 x (85 - 75)

= 4380 x 10

= 43800

b)  270 x 8 + 270 x 9 + 270

= 270 x (8 + 9 + 1)

= 270 x 18

= 4860

c) 45 x 20 x 5

= 45 x 100

= 4500

Problem 7 :

Find the product 8739 × 102 using distributive property.

Solution :

8739 × 102 = 8739 × (100 + 2)

= 8739 × 100 + 8739 x 2

= 873900 + 17478

= 891378

Problem 8 :

Trina lives in an apartment. The table shows some of the expenses that Trina paid for three months to live in the apartment.

adding-whole-numbers-application-q1

Which expenses were variable expenses for Trina during these three months?

a) Water and Electricity only     b) Rent, Water, and Electricity

c) Rent and Cable TV only      d) Cable TV only

Solution :

Water and electricity are the variable expenses.

Problem 9 :

The table shows the number of miles a family will travel next summer.

adding-whole-numbers-application-q2.png

Which is the best estimate of the combined number of miles this family will travel next summer?

a) 700 mi      b) 900 mi       c) 1,100 mi     d) 2,300 mi

Solution :

= 81 + 129 + 181 + 110 + 288 + 78

= 80 + 1 + 120 + 9 + 180 + 1 + 100 + 10 + 200 + 80 + 8 + 70 + 8

= (80 + 120 + 180 + 100 + 200) + (1 + 9 + 1 + 10 + 80 + 8 + 70 + 8)

= 680 + 187

= 867

So, option b 900 miles is correct.

Problem 10 :

The table shows numbers of feet and the equivalent numbers of inches.

adding-whole-numbers-application-q3.png

Lionel painted a wall that is 12 feet long. How many inches long is the wall that Lionel painted?

a) 144 in    b) 122 in      c)  156 in.       d) 132 in.

Solution :

By observing the table, we know that each input is multiplied by 12.

12 x 12 = 144 inches

So, option a is correct.

Problem 11 :

The students in Ms. Lee’s class collected 268 books to donate to a library. The books were packed into 4 large boxes. The same number of books were packed in each box. How many books were packed in each box?

a)  52     b)  67      c)  842     d)  1,072

Solution :

Number of books were donated = 268

Number of packages = 4

Number of books were in each package = 268/4

= 67

So, option b is correct.
