STAAR MATH 5TH GRADE PRACTICE PROBLEMS

Problem 1 :

While cleaning his room, Paul found 7 cents on his desk, 98 cents under his bed, and 2 dollars and 4 cents in his closet. What was the total amount of money Paul found?

A)  $2.09        B)  $3.09     C)  $3.72        D)  $4.08

Solution :

Amount got from desk = 0.07

under bed = 0.98

from closet = 2.04

Total amount = 0.07 + 0.98 + 2.04

= 3.09

So, answer is option B.

Problem 2 :

Which comparison is NOT true?

A)  3.375 > 3.275        B)   6.875 < 6.9    C)   2.65 > 2.675

D)  7.675 < 7.75

Solution :

Option A :

Comparing 10th place, 3.375 is greater than 3.275. So, correct.

Option B :

Comparing 10th place, 6.875 is lesser than 6.9. So, correct.

Option C :

Comparing the 100th place in 2.65 and 2.675, 2.675 is greater,. So, option C is not true.

Problem 3 :

The graph shown represents the rule y = x + 1.5.

staar-grade5-q3.png

Which table contains only values that represent the rule?

staar-grade5-q3p1.png

Solution :

By observing the graph, y-intercept is 1.5.

  • When x = 1, y lies between 2 to 3. So, the value of y is 2.5
  • When x = 2, y lies between 3 to 4. So, the value of y is 3.5

So, option D is correct.

Problem 4 :

Priscilla built a cabinet shaped like a rectangular prism. The length of the base is 9 inches, and the width is 40 inches. What is the area of the base of the cabinet in square inches?

F)  49 square inches          G)  360 square inches

H)  98 square inches          J)  Not here

Solution :

Length = 9 inches, width = 40 inches, height = ?

In a rectangular prism, every shape will be in the shape of rectangle.

Area of base = length x width

= 9 x 40

= 360 square units.

Problem 5 :

A math problem is shown. What is the quotient ?

staar-grade5-q5.png

A)  0.14      B)  0.6     C)    0.06    D)  0.51

Solution :

4.68 / 78

Converting the decimal as integer by multiplying the numerator and denominator by 100.

= 468 / 7800 ==>  (468/78) x (1/100)

Dividing 468 by 78, we get 6.

= 6 x (1/100)

= 6/100

= 0.06

Problem 6 :

Wanda’s net income for the month of April was $2,438. The table shows her April budget except for an amount in the “Other” category.

staar-grade6.png

What amount, in dollars and cents, should be in the “Other” category in order for Wanda’s April budget to be balanced?

Solution :

Net income = 2438

Let x be the amount for others.

1000 + 285 + 325 + 275 + x + 450 = 2438

x + 2335 = 2438

x = 2438 - 2335

x = 103

So, the answer is 103.

Problem 7 :

One bucket of gravel has a mass of 7.05 kg. What is the mass of 20 buckets of gravel in kilograms?

A)  14.1 kg     B)   150 kg    C)  27.05 kg    D)  141 kg

Solution :

Mass of one bucket = 7.05 kg

Cost of 20 buckets = 7.05 (20)

= 14.10 kg

So, option A is correct.

Problem 8 :

The students in a class were each given a set of letters and asked to make words. The dot plot shows the numbers of students who made from 1 to 7 words.

staar-grade5-q8.png

What fraction of the students in the class made 5 or more words?

A)   1/20     B)  1/4      C)  3/10     D)  3/4

Solution :

Number of students who made 5 or more words = 6

Total number of words asked = 20

Fraction of students in the class made 5 or more = 6/20

By simplifying, we get

= 3/10

Problem 9 :

This graphic organizer is being used to classify triangles based on their angle measures or side lengths.

staar-grade5-q9.png

Which list shows all of the ways this triangle could be classified?

staar-grade5-q9p1.png

A)  Acute only     B)  Equilateral only

C)   Acute and isosceles only       D)  Acute, isosceles, and equilateral only

Solution :

From the given measure, all side are equal. So it is isosceles triangle. Since, two sides are equal, then it is isosceles triangle. Each angle is acute.

So, option D is correct.

Problem 10 :

George bought 3 peppers for a cost of $0.40 each. The model represents this situation.

staar-grade5-q10.png

Which equation shows how to find the total cost in dollars and cents of the peppers George bought?

A)  3 × 4 = 12.00         N)   3 × 40 = 120.00

C)  3 × 0.40 = 1.20      D)  3 × 0.40 = 0.12

Solution :

From the given key, it is clear each strip will represent 0.10. In the given question, in each rectangular box we have 4 strips. We have 3 boxes.

So, the answer is 3 × 0.40 = 1.20, option C.
