Problem 31 :

Find the total mass, in kilograms, of 200 blocks of chocolate each weigh 120 grams.

a) 2400 kg      b) 2.4 kg     c) 24 kg     d)  26 kg

Solution :

Weight of each chocolate = 120 grams

Number of blocks = 200

Total weight = 120 x 200

= 24000 grams

Converting grams to kg,

1000 grams = 1 kg

= 24000/1000

= 24 kg

Problem 32 :

What is the probability of picking a number 9 from a pack of playing cards?

a) 1/16     b) 1/13     c) 1/52     d)  1/15

Solution :

Total number of cards in a pack = 52

Number of cards which numbered 9 = 4

Required probability = 4/52

= 1/13

Problem 33 :

In a park there are some cats and dogs. The number of cats’ feet is double the size of the number of dogs’ noses. The number of cats is _____ of the number of dogs.

a) Double the size     b) Half the size      c) The same size

d)  Quarter the size

Solution :

Let x b the number of cats and y be the number of dogs.

Every cat will have 4 legs and each dog will have 1 nose.

4x = 2y

x = 2y/4

x = y/2

So, the answer is half the size.

Problem 34 :

A bus travels 400 km in 8 hours then what is the average speed of the bus?

a) 30 km/h     b) 50 km/h  c) 50 ½ km/h     d)  60 km/h

Solution :

Distance traveled = 400 km

time taken = 8 hours

Average speed = 400/8

= 50 km/hr

Problem 35 :

Jessy has 72 oranges. Four oranges are needed to make a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice. How many glasses of orange juice can she make?

a) 20     b) 88  c) 80     d)  18

Solution :

Number of oranges Jessy has = 72

Number of oranges will be needed to make a glass of juice

= 4

Number of glasses of juice she can make = 72/4

= 18 glasses.

Problem 36 :

Find the number of lines of symmetry of the following shape.

11plus-gl-assessment-q7.png

a) 2     b) 6     c) 4     d)  5

11plus-gl-assessment-q7s

Number of lines of symmetry can be drawn = 4

Problem 37 :

In the diagram, the area of each circle is 1 cm2. The area common to two overlapping circles is 1/8 cm2. What is the area of the region covered by the five circles?

11plus-gl-assessment-q8.png

a) 4 cm2     b) 9/2 cm2     c) 35/8 cm2     d)  19/4 cm2

Solution :

Number of circles = 5

Number of overlapping regions = 4

= 1 x 5 - 4 x 1/8

= 5 - 1/2

= 9/2 cm2

Problem 38 :

How many edges are in a triangular prism?

a) 6     b) 8   c) 9     d)  12

Solution :

Number of edges in the triangular prism = 9

Problem 39 :

What is the ratio of 500 ml to 2 litres in its simplest form?

a) 1 : 4     b) 4 : 3   c) 3 : 4     d)  4 : 1

Solution :

500 ml : 2 liters

Converting them into same quantities, we get

1 liter = 1000 ml then 2 liter = 2000 ml

= 500 : 2000

= 1 : 4

Problem 40 :

Find the missing number in the following proportion

x : 8 = 12 : 32

a) 4     b) 3   c) 2     d)  16

Solution :

x : 8 = 12 : 32

x/8 = 12/32

x = (12/32) 8

x = 12/4

x = 3
