5th GRADE MATH STAAR TEST

Problem 31 :

Mr. Fernández packed 31 red apples and 41 green apples into a box for a customer. He packed 8 boxes like this. Mr. Fernández used this equation to find x, the number of apples he packed into all the boxes.

x = (31 + 41)8

How many apples did Mr. Fernández pack into the boxes?

A)  576    B)  568    C)  80     D)  10,168

Solution :

x = (31 + 41)8

Simplify the numerical values which is inside the bracket.

x = 72(8)

x = 576

SO, option A is correct.

Problem 32 :

Which of these is NOT an example of a property tax?

A)  Tax paid on the value of a farm a person owns

B)  Tax paid on the value of a piece of land a person owns

C)  Tax paid on the value of a piece of furniture a person owns

D)  Tax paid on the value of a home a person owns

Solution :

Tax paid on the value of a piece of furniture a person owns

Problem 33 :

The table represents a relationship between x and y.

staar-grade5-q33.png

The relationship between the x-values and y-values creates a pattern that is

A)   additive, because each x-value increases by 5

B)  additive, because each y-value is determined by adding 17 to the corresponding x-value

C)  multiplicative, because each y-value is determined by multiplying the corresponding x-value by 17

D)   multiplicative, because each x-value is a multiple of 5

Solution :

x-values are increased by 5 and y-values are also increased by 5. But no options has these two changes mentioned.

Observing option B,

additive, because each y-value is determined by adding 17 to the corresponding x-value

Problem 34 :

The stem and leaf plot shows Ryan’s math scores so far this year.

staar-grade5-q34.png

What is the sum of Ryan’s greatest math score and least math score?

A)  169   B)  187      C)  176     D)  Not here

Solution :

Writing down the values

79, 82, 82, 83, 86, 90, 91, 93, 94, 97

Least value = 79, greatest value = 97

Sum of least and greatest score = 79 + 97

= 176

So, option C is correct.

Problem 35 :

The weight of sand in a large bag is 63.4 pounds. The sand in the bag is divided equally into 20 small bags. What is the weight in pounds of the sand in each small bag?

A)  3.114 lb    B)  3.107 lb     C) 31.7 lb    D 3.17 lb.

Solution :

Weight of large bag = 63.4 pounds

This quantity is divided into 20 small bags.

weight of 1 small bag = 63.4/20

= (63.4/2) x (1/10)

= 31.7/10

3.17 lb

Problem 36 :

Henry used a number machine to create ordered pairs of numbers. Each number he put into the machine, x, came out as a different number, y, based on a rule. Some ordered pairs from Henry’s machine are shown.

Solution :

Writing the given input and output in the order (input, output)

(4, 2) (6, 3) (8, 4) (10, 5)

So, option A is correct.
